We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Lindsay Garfield Pitcher, 86, on August 20th, 2020. Lindsay was born on September 28th, 1933 in Old Bonaventure, Trinity Bay, NL. Son of the late Ralph & Edith (Hodder) Pitcher, he was pre-deceased by sons Brian, Gary, and David and brothers Weston and Edgar. Lindsay is survived by Ellen, his wife of 61 years, son Robert [Jackie], sister Annie [King], grandsons Christopher and Alexander Pitcher, as well as many nieces and nephews. Lindsay was the first member of his village to go to college. He attended Memorial University in 1950/51 and taught school in several Newfoundland villages for 2 years before striking out for Toronto in 1952, where he worked for CP Rail and a number of other companies. He met his loving and caring wife Ellen [nee Rasmussen] in 1957, and a year and a half later they were married and starting a family. In 1968, Lindsay accepted a position as the Maritimes' sales representative for Federal Bolt and Nut, DOCAP Corporation and Automotive Hardware. The young family moved several times before settling in Cole Harbour and later St Margaret's Bay, NS, and after 27 years of loyal service, he retired in 1991. Lindsay was a dedicated member of United Commercial Travelers (UCT) since 1972, serving on local counsel and becoming Supreme Chaplain in 1991-92 during the tenure of Supreme Councillor, the late Peter Sworin. Lindsay loved fishing and hunting and spent many a day in his little Cape Islander fishing boat on St Margaret's Bay in the fog. One of his fondest memories was a helicopter trip with his nephew, Kevin King, to fish for salmon in Labrador. Lindsay & Ellen traveled extensively through the USA, Caribbean, Europe, and Canada, including two road trips to Alaska and many winters in Florida. While his favourite vacation spot was Barbados, where he and Ellen made their annual trips, his most memorable trip was to Australia and New Zealand with his brother Edgar and his wife Daphne. During their travels they met many wonderful people with whom they kept in touch and remain great friends to this day. We are forever grateful for the kindness and compassion we received from the QE II Palliative Care staff, the VON, the personal care workers at ParaMed, and many friends and family who made a tremendous difference during his final days.
