Ethel Berry Cowell Obituary

Ethel Berry (Kegel) Cowell, 97, went to meet her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, August 18,2020. Ethel, also known as Ermine to her siblings, and Honey to her grandchildren, was born on August 17, 1923 to Charles and Anna (Houska) Kegel. She was the eighth of 10 children, and the last of the Kegel Clan to remain. She was smitten by a handsome lad named Glen Cowell. While she awaited his return from World War II, she obtained a teaching degree and landed her first job in Box Elder, MT. Upon Glen's return, the young couple was married on November 25, 1945. To this union were born four children, Steve, Jeff, David, and Ann. She took a teaching position in the Harlem Elementary School, and later specialized in remedial reading. She had a positive impact on the lives of many students. Living close to Highway 2, she often had unexpected company, but was always gracious about setting extra plates at her mealtime. She was an active member of the American Lutheran Church in Harlem, helping with the Sunday School, and the WELCA group. She was also active in the community as a member of Ladies Auxiliary, Busy XX, and Birthday Club. Ethel took great pride in her home and family, and was a loyal and loving partner to Glen for 53 years. She was quick to laugh, with a twinkle in her eyes, and had a great sense of humor. She was also comforting, and could give sound advice without being judgmental. Ethel is survived by her sons Steve (Sharon) in Cheyenne, WY and Jeff (Laura) in Big Timber, MT, and her daughter Ann (Richard) in Harlem, MT. She also leaves behind 11 grandchildren, many great grandchildren, and one great great grandson. Ethel was preceded in death by her husband Glen, her son David, her parents, and her siblings. How blessed we were to know her!

Memorial donations can be made to The Blaine III Ambulance & The Harlem Volunteer Fire Department.
