Sharon Smith died on August 20, 2020 after a prolonged battle with cancer. She lived her 74 years as a fiercely independent woman. She was devoted to family and helped take care of her mother, Carolyn Haselbauer Smith, and her uncle, Edwin Haselbauer in his later years. The family could be found weekly on Sundays at the Old Bavarian Inn.

Sharon grew up in Bohemia, NY and attended Sayville High School. Following graduation, she moved to Manorville and began working at Brookhaven Labs, where for several decades she was employed as an administrative assistant/office manager, working with groups of physicists.

A soft-hearted lover of animals, Sharon sometimes had more cats than she knew what to do with. Her cat food and Vet bills could have easily paid for extravagant vacations, but her priorities were all about her feline friends.

Sharon was an avid supporter of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Bohemia, and after retiring, she volunteered at the Moriches Historical Society and Kent Animal Shelter.

Sharon is survived by several cousins, and was especially close with her cousin Dave Vallee.
