Gladys Jeanne Olson Obituary

Gladys Jeanne Reber Olson, beloved wife of Vincent Thoreson Olson, died on August 17, 2020. She was born in St. George UT on January 21, 1934 as the third child of Harold Joseph Reber and Doris Syphus Reber who operated a small farm and ranch in Littlefield AZ.

She attended Utah State University for 2 years and she met Vince.  On July 29, 1953, they were married in the Logan, Utah temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. 

Growing up Gladys churned butter, cottage cheese, ice-cream, homemade bread and other goodies. As she raised her children, she canned fruits and vegetables from her garden. She sewed many clothes for her 5 living children. She also crocheted afghans and tied quilts for her posterity.

A few of her most loved callings serving the Lord were RS Teacher, RS Ward and Stake president, Stake YW president, YW Laurel advisor.

She supported Vince in all his callings--including Branch President-twice, Stake YM president, Stake YSA High Councilman for 9 years.  She served missionaries, LDS servicemen/women, YSA with much hospitality and many meals, including campouts. Lasagna was the main Sunday staple.

Gladys and her husband, Vince, served as ordinance workers in the Mount Timpanogos temple for 12 years. They served an LDS mission to the NY, NY mission on the Bermuda Island as Bishop and leadership/fellowship missionaries. They also served as stake family history missionaries in the Pleasant Grove Stake.

She was a military wife for 20 years and survived Vince’s 2 tours in Vietnam, and 25 moves. She lived all over the US including: USU Logan UT; Ellsworth AFB Rapid City SD; Camp Gary San Marcos, TX; Fort Bliss El Paso TX—3 times; Fort Sill Lawton OK; Fort Leavenworth Kansas City KS; Fort Rucker Dothan AL-4 times; Fort Lewis Tacoma WA-twice; Fort Eustis Newport News VA; St George UT—twice; Inglewood CA; Ankara Turkey and Heidelberg Germany. She has visited 22 countries, and 44 states. Vince made a habit of touring wherever they lived. 

Gladys made every house a home, despite the packing and unpacking.

She is survived by 2 siblings:  Marilyn Pulsipher and Lee (Mina) Reber. She was preceded in death by her husband Vincent Thoreson Olson who died of Parkinson’s disease after 60 years of marriage; a baby daughter, Susan Olson; and a grandson, Ryan Olson. .

She has 5 children, 18 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren:  Linda Olson of Orem UT, 4 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren; Scott (Dianne) Olson of Bend OR, 3 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, Lori (John) Hinton of Newtown IN, 3 grandchildren, 5 great- grandchildren, Bryan (Tracy) Olson of Las Cruces NM 3 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and LeeAnn (James) Gardner of San Antonio TX, 5 grandchildren.

Family and friends may attend a viewing Monday, August 31, 2020 from 10:00 -11:45 a.m. at Olpin Family Mortuary, 494 S 400 E, Pleasant Grove, Utah.  A private graveside service will be in the Pleasant Grove City Cemetery.  Condolences may be sent to the family at www.olpinmortuary.com.
