Alicia Gamiz-Ramirez Obituary

“And if I go and prepare a place for you I will come again and take you myself that where I am you may be also" John 14:3 It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the passing of our beloved Alicia on August 17th 2020. She rose into the Almighty's arms at the age of 93 and is now at peace in Heaven. Alicia was born in Colonia Portales in Mexico City on December 19th 1926. She was the daughter of General Fortunato Gamiz and Professor Anna Maria Ramirez, along with seven siblings. She graduated from the Normal Superior de Maestros in Mexico City and specialized in English Language and Plastic Arts, taking classes from the world renowned muralist Diego Rivera. During her student years she was a member of the "Son Latino" orchestra where she played piano at social events. She loved everything that had to do with art and beauty. Alicia taught mostly elementary school and junior high classes. She was a dedicated, talented teacher and many of her students remember her with love to this day. Alicia wed at 27 to Robert F. Sheward and lived in Patzcuaro, Michoacan, Mexico, going back and forth to Canada several times before settling in Calgary in 1966. She had five children: Roberto, Ricardo, Florence, Teresa and Estrellita. She continued teaching piano, painting and sculpture throughout her life. Some of her students became very well known for their painting later on. Alicia's love for music and arts was instilled in her children and she found joy in teaching them. During the 70’s and 80’s she took pride in educating people in Canada about Mexico and gave many lectures in schools about tradition and culture. She had a deep inner strength that helped her through the hard times. In her later years she had a passion for plants and gardening and enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She is survived by her five children, sixteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren who have the honour of calling her Nana. Alicia lived a long and interesting life and will be sincerely missed by those who love her. Alicia, Mama, Nana - you live forever in our hearts. Due to COVID, a small, private memorial service for the family will be held at a future date.
