Roy attended Barnwell Schools, where he was an outstanding football and baseball player. He joined the Navy during the Korean War and served four years on the USS Chipola during the Korean Conflict . After his discharge from the military, he began his textile career with Amerotron, which later became Milliken’s Barnwell Plant. He retired from Milliken in 1991, having served 36 years in various supervisory positions. He then worked part-time as Chief Bailiff in the Barnwell County Court System until 2009. Roy and Georgia were married 69 years. They spent their first 29 years in Elko and were very active in the Elko Baptist Church where Roy served as deacon. They moved back to Barnwell in 1980, joining the First Baptist Church (where Georgia had grown up), He was an active member of First Baptist Church in Barnwell, and served as deacon for many years. He was also a member of the Ellenton Agriculture Club, and enjoyed the Men’s Breakfast Club. Roy kept a beautiful yard, and loved sharing his daylilies with friends and neighbors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, shrimping, and golfing. Roy was blessed with good health and mobility in his senior years. For a number of years, he enjoyed taking DVDs of the Sunday service to shut-ins, and carried meals on wheels. He worked hard at having a pretty yard, and was especially known for his beautiful day-lilies. In January 2020, due to health and age issues, Georgia and Roy moved to Cumberland Village in Aiken, an Independent Retirement Community. Roy was a wonderful husband, father, grandparent, and great-grandparent. We all will miss him so much, and will have to learn to do life without him, but so thankful that we have so many cherished memories to sustain us. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Child Development Center, 161 Allen Street, Barnwell, SC 29812, or to the charity of your choice.
