ERWIN A. BENGTSON NEW SWEDEN New Sweden – Erwin A. Bengtson, 96, husband of Peggy (Peers) Bengtson, passed away peacefully, Saturday morning, August 8, 2020 at his New Sweden home. He was born August 5, 1924 in Caribou, the son of Albert and Hildur (Thenser) Bengtson. He attended New Sweden schools and was a graduate of the Caribou High School, Class of 1941. Erwin had been self-employed as a farmer in New Sweden until 1957, at which time he became employed by Maine Public Service as a generator operator at diesel, steam and hydro power plants until his retirement 1987. Following his retirement, Erwin generously volunteered his time at Cary Medical Center for several years. He was a member of the New Sweden School Department Health Council where he served as vice president, and was an active member of the Gustaf-Adolph Lutheran Church, New Sweden. On June 18, 2017, Erwin was awarded the Boston Post Cane as the oldest New Sweden resident. Erwin also greatly enjoyed square dancing with both the Presque Isle Spud Shufflers and the Caribou Hoofers. Erwin truly embraced retirement and the time it allowed him to spend with his wife and family. In addition to his parents, Erwin was predeceased by his son, Robert Bengtson; one sister, Irene Ginn. He is survived by his wife of seventy-six years, Peggy Bengtson of New Sweden; two sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Linda Bengtson of China, Rodney and Michelle Bengtson of Berlin, NH; one daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and Howard Higgins of New Sweden; eighteen grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. A private graveside service will be conducted at the New Sweden Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Robert Smith officiating. All are welcomed to attend a time of continued fellowship with refreshments Friday August 14, 2020 from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m. at Erwin and Peggy’s home, 408 East Road, New Sweden, where a drive through reception line will be available to those who wish to visit from the safety and comfort of their vehicle. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute in memory of Mr. Bengtson to the Gustaf-Adolph Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 54, New Sweden, Maine 04762.
