Margaret Reeve Soffe

View Funeral Webcast Margaret Reeve Soffe passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 6, 2020, just 2 months shy of her 102nd birthday. She was born October 8, 1918 in Hinckley, Utah, the third of seven children born to John and Mary Lyman Reeve. After being double promoted during her elementary grades, Margaret graduated from Hinckley High School at age 16, excelling in typing and shorthand. She attended BYU while working as a stenographer on campus and later as a secretary for a Provo lawyer. She met Kenneth Steel Soffe while attending BYU, and they were married March 19, 1938. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple June 5, 1942. After Ken graduated from BYU, his first job took them down in Moab, Utah, where Ken taught and coached at the high school and Margaret worked as a secretary for a young lawyer. Their home was a remodeled old jail house. After just a year, they made Provo their home once again, building a home on Briar Ave and then later on Maple Lane. Before starting a family, Margaret worked with the Works Progress Administration and then at the pipe plant. Ken was in the service for a few years and Margaret sometimes lived back East with him and sometimes at home with her Mother. All five of their children, Mary, Valera, Tim, Mark and Christie were born while they lived in Provo. The family decided to leave Provo in 1965 and build a home on their mink ranch in Orem. Eventually the mink ranch became their full time work with Margaret working right alongside Ken and their children during those 25 years. After selling the mink farm, Mother served as secretary to President Gunther at the Provo Temple while Ken was the recorder for several years. Ken and Margaret bought a cabin in Vivian Park in Provo Canyon in 1973. They spent years fixing it up, and it became a wonderful gathering place for their family. They owned a duplex in Provo and often spent the summer at the cabin and winter at the duplex. Many winters were also spent in St George or Mesa. During that time Margaret had time to sew, one of her favorite activities and write her 522 page personal history. Margaret loved the gospel of Jesus Christ and served in all the auxiliaries on the stake and ward levels. But her greatest service was one on one. She ministered to all ages and was a true friend and loving Mother. She taught by her words, but much more by her example. She always wanted to live according to the Savior’s example. After Ken passed away on Aug 7, 2000, Margaret chose to spend her next 20 years serving a full time proselyting mission with her sister at age 83 for 1.5 years in Richmond, VA, serving in the Provo Temple for 10 years, ministering to widows and taking them to church and medical appointments, volunteering in the primary nursery for years, and loving and serving her large family. Margaret endured well to the very end, comforting and encouraging family and friends who sought her out to say good-bye in the last few weeks of her life. It is easy to imagine her loving reunion with those who preceded her in death: her parents and all her siblings, her husband Ken and her daughter Valera. She is survived by her children Mary Bond (LaVerl), Timothy Soffe (Trudy), Mark Soffe (Diane) and Christie Jensen (Marshall), 31 grandchildren, 73 great grandchildren and 9 great, great grandchildren. A public viewing will be held on Tuesday, August 11, 2020 from 9:00-10:30 am at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley, 1007 W. South Jordan Parkway, South Jordan, Utah. Masks are required. Private services will follow. Interment at South Jordan City Cemetery. Services will be live streamed and can be viewed by clicking on the link at the top of this page.
