PETERSEN – Olivine Petersen wife of the Late Ernie Petersen of Yorkton, formerly of Preeceville passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2020 at the Canora Hospital. She was 89 years of age.

     Olivine Angeline Petersen (Becken) was born Sept. 29, 1930 to Kristian Becken and Ruth Lundgren. Olivine was the younger sister to her brother Raymond. She lived in Preeceville near the school which was handy as she took all her schooling in Preeceville. She and her brother were very close and when young mom would follow her older brother all around. One of her fondest memories was going by train to visit her grandmother Anna who lived in Sturgis.

   One of mom’s childhood friends was Esther Holowachuk (Peterson). They were together at a Hard-times dance where mom met a tall, dark handsome man that she would later marry. She said he was dressed in bib overalls and checked shirt.

   On Nov. 22, 1950 she married Ernest (Ernie) Petersen. Mom often talked about how cold that day was. Her bouquet of yellow chrysanthemums froze. They did have a wedding dance to liven things up. Mom loved to dance and was a good dancer. (Dad not so much)

   They lived, until after the birth of their first daughter Agnes Lynn, on a quarter section west of Twin Lakes. Later they moved to the Petersen farm 8 miles west of Preeceville near Nelson Lake. Mom had a large garden and raised chickens. She also helped with the milking of cows. Mom was a great cook and always had a lot of baking on hand for those who dropped in. This was often as Dad was friends with many and always was inviting people in for coffee.

     Mom never did learn to drive and she was glad of it. She could make meals and keep the freezer full instead of driving the farm equipment.

   Mom was involved in the Poplar Grove Lutheran Church in Ketchen and was secretary for the Poplar Grove Cemetery Association for many, many years.

     Mom and Dad raised four daughters Agnes, Darlene, Linda and Gloria and a nephew Sydney. They moved to Preeceville and had a new home moved in. Mom still felt the need to cook and bake, even after her family were grown up. She worked as a cook at the Lions Hostel as well as the Golden West Hotel. Mom was a nurturer and care giver. She helped look after her father-in law Arnold Petersen and her brother- in -law Wilfred Petersen until their passing.

   She continued to live in her house in Preeceville even after Ernie’s passing in 2001.       She also continued the tradition of always having the coffee on and baking in the house. She loved Christmas and started baking in Nov. to fill the deep-freezers. The grandkids looked forward to their care packages with good things all made with love. Mom was proud of her Scandinavian roots and kept up the tradition of lefsa making and Lutefisk on Christmas Eve. If something was going awry you would hear UFFDA. Mom enjoyed reading and travelling. She often spoke of her trip to the Maritimes, Hawaii and her Mother-Daughter Caribbean Cruise. In 2018 she decided that looking after a house and yard was getting to be too much and moved into Yorkton Crossing in Yorkton. She made many good friends there. They were very concerned and caring when she became ill.

     Mom was predeceased by her parents, her 4 brothers-in –law, 3 nephews, and her husband Ernie in 2001.

     She leaves to mourn her brother Ray of Edmonton, her daughter Agnes (Phil) Murrin of Preeceville, daughter Darlene (Blaine) Medlang of Sturgis, daughter Linda (Rod) Blender of Preeceville and daughter Gloria of Saskatoon. Also her nephew Syd Petersen of Saskatoon, Her grandchildren: Renee (Darcy) Glasier (Murrin) of Rocky Mountain House, Michael (Kelly) Blender of Grande Prairie, Amanda (Dave) Dumont (Blender) of Martinsville, Jared (Stef) Medlang of Saskatoon, Brendan (Kate) Medlang of Martinsville, Deara Medlang of Lethbridge, Amber Serhan of Verdun, Quebec, Teariney and Kimberly Petersen of Saskatoon. Her great grandchildren Ryley, Zander and Eden Glasier, Hunter and Hayley Dumont, Olivine (Ollie-mom’s namesake) and Sophie Blender(twins)and Eric, Brett, Brooke and Will Medlang. Her two sister-in-laws: Gladys Hornett and Shirley Petersen-both of B.C. and nephews and nieces.

Dearly missed and forever loved.

     Funeral Services were held on Monday, August 10, 2020 from St. John Lutheran Church in Preeceville with Pastor Hein Bertram officiating. Honourary Bearers were Michael Blender, Amber Serhan, Kimberly Petersen, Teariney Petersen and her eleven great grandchildren. Interment followed in the Preeceville Lutheran Cemetery with Renee Glasier, Amanda Dumont, Deara Medlang, Jared Medlang, Brendan Medlang and Hunter Dumont serving as the casketbearers.
