Robert Morgan Obituary

Bob was born in Tampa, Florida on April 22, 1927. He had a sister, Gloria, who was four years older. They lived with their parents Rufus and Ruth Morgan, in a suburb of Tampa called, Ballast Point. By the 1930’s a severe depression affected the economy and the Morgan’s increased their household to include grandparents at one time or another. Bob has fond memories of his school days and was a good student. He was able to move ahead in his elementary class, so that by the time he graduated from High School, he did so a year earlier than most. The Morgan family rented a house on Frances Avenue, moved to Palm River, and eventually he attended Hillsborough High School. He graduated in June, 1944 at the age of 17. His first full-time job was with the post office, which he enjoyed and was proud of. In April, 1945, he volunteered for a three-year enlistment in the Coast Guard. He served on the USS Galatea, a Coast Guard cutter and attended electronics school in Groton, Connecticut. After the war he went to the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL, earning a degree in pharmacology. Soon after he was married to Bettie Bridges and began working for Wynthrop Laboratories as a sales representative to doctor’s offices. He opened his own drug store, “Morgan Drugs” in St. Petersburg, FL and later owned “Skyway Drugs” in south St. Petersburg. His family was always his priority. With a love for travel, the family enjoyed summer vacations all over the United States and Europe, and they were able to see the “Continental 48” in a Starcraft pop-up camper. Bob always loved retelling stories of the family’s crazy camping days. Bob eventually sold his pharmacy and began to work for Eckerd Drug Stores, which meant the family moved to Orlando so he could manage several drug stores in that area. During this period, his 3 daughters, Debbie, Donna, and Beth Ann, graduated from the University of Central Florida and they all worked for Walt Disney World at one time or another. His work returned him to Pinellas County where he retired. He and Bettie decided to go their separate ways on amicable terms. Several years later, Bob’s eldest daughter, Debbie, contracted breast cancer, lost her battle with it, and went home to be with the Lord in 2000. After that, Bob lived in Hudson and attended First United Methodist Church of Hudson where he met Jini Bruyn when a group from the church traveled to Israel. In 2002, Bob and Jini were married, and Bob “inherited” Mark, Rick, and Sherry – Jini “inherited” Donna and Beth Ann. Bob and Jini enjoyed a wonderful life of travel and church service together for 15 years. They both loved music and served faithfully in the choir. Bob’s love for young people in general and the youth of his church in particular afforded him the opportunity to serve them as advisor and mentor. Bob and Jini traveled the world together. Summing up his life-long travels, he has been to every continent except the Arctic, Antarctica, and Australia! Bob’s infectious sense of humor was enjoyed by everyone who knew him. He was always a “glass-half-full” kind of guy. Most of all, Bob’s love of the Lord Jesus Christ was evident to all who crossed his path. He wanted people to know of Christ’s atoning work on the cross for each of us is the path to eternal life with Him! Bob lived to the happy age of 93 and looked forward to meeting Jesus.
