Gary Wayne Scholes Milford, Michigan Obituary

Gary Wayne Scholes

Gary Wayne Scholes a resident of Milford for over fifty years, died quietly at his home there in the early hours of Saturday morning, having fallen asleep on his sofa and waking in the heaven he so deeply believed in. He was 68 years old. Born on the 15th of February in 1952, and raised in Detroit, Gary was the son of Carlos and May Louise (Mathews) Scholes who precede him in death, as did his brother, Roger who died in 1995. When he was sixteen, the family moved to Milford and Gary graduated from Milford High School in 1971. For years Gary and his Mother attended Milford United Methodist Church where he made many lifelong friends who saw in Gary’s simple faith and generous aspect, an agent of that amazing grace the choir gives voice to. He lived his life in the present tense, regarding each moment as a gift from God to be used in conversation and community with others. Family and friends, passers by and perfect strangers all found in Gary Scholes a curiosity about others, a willingness to listen and visit, and an eagerness to share which he took with him on his daily walks around Milford where he was well known to merchants and locals who mightn’t know his name but were blessed by his optimism and kindness. Regardless of the crosses he was fated to bear, the death of parents, his brother, his own serious injury in a house fire and disabilities of infirmity and age, Gary remained a reliable witness to God’s gift of being and the love of his fellow pilgrims. He read and often quoted from scripture, from the homilies of local preachers, and the stories he encountered in his daily rounds. He loved gadgets and gizmos and the latest technologies. Once asked, after his long recovery from the house fire he survived, if he believed in miracles, he replied, “I am a miracle!” Which, of course, he was; and a gift. He is survived by his devoted sister, Carlene May; his sister-in-law, Connie Hart; three nieces and three nephews and an extended family of friends who mourn his passing and give thanks to God for Gary’s blessed life among us. Rev. Doug McMunn will officiate at a graveside service at Milford Memorial Cemetery on Tuesday morning at 11:15. Memorial Contributions are encouraged in Gary's name to the Milford United Methodist Church, 1200 Atlantic St., Milford, MI 48381 For further information, please phone Lynch & Sons, Milford at 248-684-6645

I'll never forget Gary's excitement and friendliness after church at Milford United Methodist Church. He was proud of his faith, and always eager to share what he'd been up to lately, or the newest pin or button he got. I really value that kind of openness. It's rare. It... Continue Reading

I have the fondest memories of Uncle Gary with his CB radios and his high tech equipment. It was fascinating to watch him, he could work on anything electrical. He loved his family so much and always kept us close to his heart. He is in heaven above with my dad, grand... Continue Reading
