James J. Mahoney, Jr.

James J. Mahoney Jr. was born on January 22, 1926 and grew up in Camden N.J. on Sweet Potato Hill. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1943. He was a Radioman, 3rd Class who sailed around the world to places like Palermo Sicily, Oran Africa, and Thule Greenland. For over forty years, Dad was an Ironworker with Local 399. He also became a volunteer fireman and was the oldest living member of the Bellmawr Firehall. Jim loved spending time at the firehall with his friends in the building that he helped construct. Dad had a passion for music and loved playing his guitar and harmonica. Country music was his favorite and some of the artists he enjoyed listening to were Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Ray Charles. He loved his granddaughter Kalleigh and sang songs to her like, Bell Bottom Trousers, Hail, Hail, the Gang’s All Here, I Cried for You, Now It’s Your Turn to Cry Over Me, Crazy, and the Pepsi Cola Jingle. He played his harmonica up until the night before he passed. Dad also enjoyed fishing and frequently went out on the Porgy IV through the years. Dad was the last member of the Mahoney family. He is survived by his daughters, Ermalee Mahoney Barnes, Charmaine Mahoney Kiry, Cheryl Chandler, Kelly Mahoney Johnston, and Cindy Mahoney Crawford. He was also the beloved Pop Pop to Kalleigh Crawford. He was loved by all who met him. Now he is reunited with his bride Shirley who passed away in 2018. Here’s to you Dad, give Mom a kiss from us.
