Betsy Eunice Thomas Obituary

Psalm 55:6 And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest.

It is with deepest sympathy that we announce the passing of Mrs. Betsy Thomas of 161 Frost Road, Camden.

Betsy Eunice Jones Thomas was born January 26, 1930 to the Reverend Lexie and Charity Jones in Camden, SC.  She was the eldest of three daughters.

As a teenager she would spend her summers in either New Jersey or Connecticut with her aunts and uncles.  That was the highlight of her teenage years and sparked her interest in travel.

She attended and graduated from Jackson High School in Camden, SC and would talk about how she would walk from Washington Park each school day to Jackson High School.  Determination.

Shortly after graduating from high school, she moved to Norwalk, CT to live with her aunt, Ms. Bessie Campbell who was her Godmother.  While living in Connecticut she married her high school beau, William H. Thomas, son of Mr. Hughey and Queenie Thomas of Camden, SC.  From that union, they had two children.

She loved to travel and spent her vacations from work traveling to various places around the globe.  She lived in New York City much of her adult life where she worked as a supervisor for New York City Health Department and as a Practical Nurse for various healthcare facilities.  Upon retirement, she moved to Florida where, at the age of 66, she decided to become a bailiff.  She was beloved and much sought after by the judges assigned court houses in Orlando, Florida because of her ability to calm defendants in the court room.  She finally retired for good at the age of 74.

She was preceded in death by both sisters, Mary Miller and Elise Lee.

Surviving are her son Michael William Thomas of Pooler, GA; her daughter: Clarissa Thomas Bracey of Camden, SC; a son-in-law: Thomas L. Bracey of Camden, SC, Goddaughter: Tanya Williams Thomas of Camden, SC; and Godson: “Bo” Lee of Lugoff, SC.  She has three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, all living in New York who will dearly miss their Nana, as well as, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.  She wanted to leave a legacy, and she has through her beloved family.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, August 7, 2020 at 10:00 AM at Hyco Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. Public viewing will be held from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
