Robert Joseph Hartung, aged 35, residing in Bozeman, MT passed away on July 25, 2020. Robert, born on June 17,1985 to Leilani and Philip Hartung, grew up in Livingston, MT where he learned a love of fishing, hunting and skiing. After September 11, Robert felt called to serve his country. He enlisted in the Army straight out of high school and was stationed in Würzburg, Germany. Robert served as a TUAV drone mechanic with the 101st Military Intelligence Battalion attached to the 1st Infantry Division, “The Big Red One”.


Robert was universally loved within his company and his platoon mates considered him a brother. He was known for his compassion, hospitality, terrific sense of humor and laid back demeanor which made him a pleasure to be around. Robert was honorably discharged in April of 2008, after receiving three Army Commendation Medals, an Army Achievement Medal and completing two tours of duty in Iraq. After completion of his military service, he enrolled in Montana State University and graduated in the fall of 2013 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.


In January of 2016, Robert was introduced to the love of his life, Elizabeth (Beth) Hawes. The couple were married on August 24, 2019 and welcomed their son, Henry (Hank) Robert Hartung on July 3, 2020. Robert and Beth cherished their time together, enjoying time with friends and family, playing games, camping, Bobcat football and lots of laughter. Robert was overjoyed by the birth of his son who he nicknamed “Potato”.


Robert was known to be a devoted friend with a quick wit, a love of knowledge and a passion for Montana State football (Go Bobcats!). He will be remembered for his kindness, compassion, loyalty, a strong instinct for service and his infectious giggle.


Robert is survived by his wife, Beth, and their son, Henry; His parents, Leilani and Philip Hartung; His sister and brother-in-law, Sage and Ben Hammer; niece, Avary, and nephew, Heath; His paternal grandmother, Shirley Hartung; As well as a number of aunts, uncles, cousins and many, many friends. Robert was well loved and will be forever missed.
