Mrs. Hilda Sawyer Andrews, age 98 of Thomaston, Georgia died Monday, July 20, 2020 at Riverside Health and Rehab. Graveside funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, July 25, 2020 at 10:00 A.M. at South View Cemetery in Thomaston with Rev. Andy Cunningham and Rev. Herb Flanders officiating. Mrs. Andrews was born in New Brockton, Alabama on March 24, 1922 to Wade Hampton Sawyer and Pearl Jones Sawyer. She graduated from New Brockton High School, and in 1944 she graduated from Troy University where she was elected as Student Body President. She was also a member of Who’s Who in American Colleges and was a majorette in the Red Wave Band at Troy University. After college, she taught school in Opp, Alabama, DeFuniak Springs, Florida and LaGrange, Georgia. In 1948 she married John William Andrews, III of LaGrange. They moved to Thomaston in 1953 to manage and later own the Hotel Upson until it closed in 1991. Miss Hilda was well known for her concoctions of congealed salads and delicious casseroles that adorned the Sunday buffet at the historic Hotel Upson. Publications, such as the Atlanta Constitution, Brown’s Guide to Georgia, and Georgia’s Historic Restaurants sang praises of the wonderful Southern Food that came from the Hotel Upson Kitchen. Mrs. Andrews was a very active member of the Thomaston First United Methodist Church for 67 years where she taught Sunday School in the Youth and Adult Divisions. She was a past regent of the John Houston Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution and a long-time member of the Upson Regional Medical Center Auxilliary. Hilda was the last surviving member of her Tuesday afternoon bridge club. Mrs. Andrews is survived by two sons, John William (Barbara) Andrews, IV and Dr. Wade Mark (Donna) Andrews both of Thomaston, a brother John Edward Sawyer of Greer, South Carolina. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Luara Leigh French, John William Andrews, V, Anna Jane Streetman, Eleta Andrews, Harriett Sawyer Holley, Mary Ann Coker and John Mathis. Eleven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Andrews was preceded in death by her husband John Andrews, her sister Trelle Phillips and her brother Will H. Sawyer.
