Nancy Irene Oswalt

Nancy Irene Oswalt, 81, of Elk Point, South Dakota passed away peacefully on Friday, July 17, 2020 at her home. Nancy was born on June 4, 1939, the daughter of Delmont & Irene (Pierce) Johnson in Vermillion, South Dakota. Nancy graduated from Elk Point High School in 1957 and attended the University of South Dakota. Nancy lived in St. Paul, Minnesota where her son, Mitch was born and her daughter, Tanya was born in Las Vegas. Eventually she moved back to reside in Elk Point. Nancy was employed by Electro-Magic-Inc and Allied Industrial Products in Vermillion, SD, She later worked for Northern Propane in Dakota City, NE and retired from J. Myron Olson & Son in Sioux City, IA. Her profession for most of her employment was a bookkeeper. For many years during the summer, Nancy lifeguarded part-time at the Elk Point Public Pool. Nancy was not afraid of hard work and getting her hands dirty. She built a full size playhouse with appliances for Tanya as well as cages for the rabbits among many other projects. Nancy enjoyed gardening, something she probably inherited from her mother. She also enjoyed fishing, playing cards and hunting mushroom and asparagus in the spring. She loved dogs, especially German Shepherds, over the years, she had a few, Shasta, Ben, Bear, and Sarge. Nancy was a loyal and loving mother, sister, daughter, and friend. She will be missed by those who knew her! Nancy is survived by her two children, Mitchell Johnson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Tanya Layne of Fort Dodge, Iowa; her two grandchildren, Saij & Sienna Layne, two brothers, Paul (Mary) Johnson of Billings, Montana, and Glenn (Sue) Johnson of Mahtomedi, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, James Easton.
