Melba Carter Morrison, 89, of Atlanta died Friday, February 9, 2007. She was born July 7, 1917, in McLemoresville, TN, to the late Horace Leroy Carter and Ethel Harvey Carter. She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Winfield Scott Morrison, Jr. After graduating from McLemoresville High School in 1934, she came to Atlanta to visit her brother Leon, and while here met Winfield Morrison. She studied piano at the Atlanta Conservatory of Music for over two years, and then she and Winfield married on December 26, 1936. She was an extremely talented pianist who could play any song "by ear". Everyone loved listening to her play everything from the classics to boogie-woogie to rock and roll. She also had an exceptional gift for teaching young children and was employed at the Glenn Memorial United Methodist Kindergarten as a music teacher and kindergarten teacher for over 21 years. She officially retired in 1982, but for seven more years was the Kindergarten's music teacher and pianist for special performances. She was a member of Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church for over 54 years. In addition to her work in the Kindergarten, she was a Sunday school teacher for 12 years, a regular teacher for Vacation Bible School classes, and the pianist for the Judson C. Ward Sunday School Class for several years. Melba had a wonderful sense of humor and her contagious laughter brought fun and life to all occasions. She loved playing the piano, reading, recounting and recording family history, discussing politics, working crossword and jigsaw puzzles, playing bridge and keeping a daily journal. She could sew anything from curtains to evening gowns, was an excellent cook, and enjoyed gardening, refinishing furniture, and interior decorating. She was a wonderful person whose constant love, guidance, support, encouragement, and zest for life will be deeply missed. Her family is truly blessed to have had her in their lives for so many years. She is survived by her son, Winfield Scott Morrison, III; daughters and sons-in-law, Kay and Bob Dickinson of Duluth, GA, and Christy and Rex Pegram of Apex, NC; grandchildren, Maggi, Bonnie and Scottie Morrison, Marie Dickinson, Keith and Beth Dickinson, Matthew Dickinson, and Katie and Jeffrey Pegram; great-grandson, Jacob Dickinson; brother, Halbert Carter; sister-in-law, Katherine Burks; brother- and sister-in-law, Joe and Evelyn Morrison; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother Leon Carter. A funeral service will be held at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church on Thursday, February 15th at 2:30 p.m., Dr. Larry Bauman officiating, with interment to follow at Westview Cemetery.
