Robert "Robbie" Boyd Nichols, resident of Kaw City, passed away Friday, June 24, 2011, at St. John Medical Center in Tulsa, OK. He was 64. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held privately, but there will be a public graveside service on Friday, July 1, 2011 at Grandview Cemetery in Kaw City at 11AM. There will be public visitation on Wednesday and Thursday from 8AM to 8PM. Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home & Crematory. Robbie was born on November 17, 1946 to Joseph H. and Maxine (Jones) Nichols in Cleveland, OK. He graduated from Cleveland High School in 1965. While at Cleveland High School, he was coached by his lifetime hero, Faye O'delle, whom he emulated throughout his life. He attended Tulsa University on a football scholarship, graduating with a B.S. in Education in 1969. While at TU he participated in football and track. He made all conference at Linebacker and set the conference record for throwing the discus. This record still stands. Robbie signed with the Baltimore Colts in 1969 as a free agent. He played linebacker and was a member of the Colts 1971 SuperBowl team. Robbie began his career in 1972 in Cleveland, Ok. During his 35 year coaching/teaching career he taught the game of life, always stressing his belief in what makes a total student/athlete, competing on the field, on the court, and in the classroom; always paying homage to the Lord for His many blessings. Robbie married Belva in 1969 in Tulsa Oklahoma and raised three sons. In the words of his children, athletes, students and family he is characterized as "A man of humble beginnings who achieved amazing things.” He had a positive effect on every student who walked into his classroom or onto his field. He will affectionately be remembered as a 'Gentle Giant' and a man of few words, who meant what he said and said what he meant." He was a fantastic father, grandfather, uncle, teacher and coach with "a great sense of humor." He is survived by his wife Belva of the home; three sons; Matthew and MaryJo Nichols of Virginia; Ryan and Melanie Nichols of Texas, Michael (Bear) and Maryanna of Germany. Loving Grandfather of Haley; Jaxon; Allie; Gunner and Yana, and many close relatives. He is preceded in death by his father Joseph; mother Nila; brother JoeWayne; father in law Guy and nephew Brian Paul. Casketbearers will be Matthew Nichols; Ryan Nichols; Michael Nichols; Larry Miller; Seth Erdner and Matt Holland Memorial contributions may be made to the Shidler Athlete Department, P.O.
