David L. Hayes

David Lee Hayes, Sr., 86, formally of Brewster, was peacefully called home to be with our heavenly Father on Thursday, July 9, 2020 at his home surrounded by his loving wife and children. He fought a long battle with an aggressive cancer. He was born in Greenville, PA to the late Charles Hayes and Gladys Hayes Rollins. He is survived by his wife, Josephine Hayes; children, Amy Angel (Alan), Jodi Shrock (Ray), Jayne Simard (Dan), Jackie Tynan (Doug) and David Hayes Jr.; grandchildren, Shane Tully (Tabatha), Danielle Nicewander (Roger), Carol Gaines (Bryan), Jacob Angel, Brooke Sessor, Breanna Simard, Chase Tynan, Colin Tynan, David Matthew Hayes and Jeran Hayes; 3 great grandchildren, Kaidance and Christian Tully and Avery Nicewander; sisters, Doris Elliot, Lillian Gallagher, Gladys Kaltenbaugh (Lloyd) and Kathy Jones (Bill), all of Pennsylvania and Shirley German of Ohio; and brother, George Hayes of Florida. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Betty Jane Hayes, Eldora Beatty and Dorothy Tumpak; and brothers, Willard Hayes and Herman Rollins. His family was his world. He was a kind, gentle, loving man who had a great zest for life. He loved and cherished his wife, children, and grandchildren. He loved the outdoors where he took pride in gardening and caring for his lawn. Those who knew him closely, probably had a nickname because he was a character. He loved to have fun and lived life to the fullest. His favorite times were spent with his family. The Railroad brought him to Brewster where he worked and retired following 41 years. He was drafted into the Army for 2 years where he served in the Korean Conflict as a corporal gunner receiving an Honorable Discharge. His railroad buddies knew him as “Snapper”. He spent many years playing softball and enjoyed working the chains for Fairless football games. David attended St. James Church at Crossroads and was a member of the VFW, Shady Rest Army Navy, Brewster Moose and the Massillon Eagles. Private family services will be held on Monday at 12:00 PM at St. James Church at Crossroads, 11491 Elton St SW, Navarre, OH 44662, with Pastor William Andrick officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Welty Cemetery. Spidell Funeral Home in Brewster is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. James at Crossroads Church.
