Acsa Evans Hitchens Obituary

Hitchens, Acsa (nee Evans) Acsa Hitchens passed away peacefully at 12:32am PDT on July 2, 2020 surrounded by her loving family. Acsa was born on December 27, 1938 in Pittsburgh, PA. Her father, James King Evans was an attorney and her mother Acsa Kennon Evans was a schoolteacher. She graduated from Carnegie Tech University in 1960, and went on to use her many talents as a special education teacher, and after retiring from education, as the transition coordinator for the Red Cross Homeless Shelter in Bucks County, PA. Always active and involved, she served as the Executive Director of the Loomis Senior LIFE Center in Loomis, CA, until just a year ago. More than anything else, Acsa loved people and always saw quirks as superpowers. She always exuded kindness and uplifted people especially kids, seniors, and underdogs. Beyond her own children and grandchildren, she had many children whom she cared for, nurtured, and mentored all across the country: some in corporations, some in prisons, and some just regular people who she encountered and clicked with. All of these individuals cite her as their “chosen” Mom. Acsa was also an extraordinary cook and her dining table was a meeting place for people of all backgrounds. Bread was broken, friendships were formed, problems were solved, debates were had, and people were fed in every sense of the word. Acsa is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Fred S. Hitchens of Roseville, CA. In addition to her husband, Acsa is survived by two sisters Ann Dzuna of Walnut Creek, CA and Sally Evans Kay (Peter) of Cincinnati, OH, two daughters Acsa Welker (Phil) also of Roseville, CA and Heather A. Hitchens (Felix Cisneros) of Brooklyn, NY, two beloved grandchildren Benjamin Ellis Welker and Acsa Frazer (AJ) Welker of Roseville, CA, foster children Cassandra Nixon and Ryan Nunn, and numerous friends all around the country. Finally, she is survived by her constant companions: chocolate Labrador Retriever Sydney, and Snowshoe Siamese cat Simon. Due to COVID-19, no in-person services are planned, but family and friends can pay tribute to Acsa on the Cochrane & Wagemann tribute wall. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Acsa may be made to Placer Food Bank (California) in order to support their mission to nourish communities throughout Placer, El Dorado and Nevada Counties. Funds given in Acsa’s memory will support monthly Free Farmer’s Markets, part of their "Feed Our Future" program, which helps increase access to healthy food and fresh produce for children, individuals, families and Seniors.
