Shirley J. Messner, 85, of Harrisburg, passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2020 at UPMC Community General Osteopathic Hospital. She was born on June 18, 1935 in Wiconisco Township, Dauphin County, to the late Roy Lincoln Hawk and Emma Elizabeth (Houtz) Hawk. Shirley was an active member of the former Grace Evangelical Congregational Church, Lawnton, PA, where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday School. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother to her family. Shirley always had a positive outlook and was a joy to everyone she met. She was the widow of Robert I. Messner. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Popp, two brothers, Roy Hawk and Joseph Hawk. Surviving are her two daughters, Cindy M. Proper and her husband Michael of Harrisburg, Tammy L. Smithhisler and her husband James of Frederick, MD, five grandsons, Bryan Proper and his wife Bailey, Tyler Proper and his wife Allisha, Grant Proper and his wife Madison, Justin Smithhisler and his wife Angela, Matthew Smithhisler, seven great grandchildren, Mackenzie Proper, Carson Proper, Parker Proper, Willow Proper, Landon Proper, Caroline Smithhisler and Jeremy Smithhisler. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, July 8, 2020 in the Jesse H. Geigle Funeral Home, 2100 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, PA 17110. Burial will be in Calvary United Methodist Cemetery, Wiconisco, PA. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday in the funeral home.
