Harry E. Hasselmann, Jr. Obituary

Harry E. Hasselmann, Jr., age 78, a resident of Aurora, IL, passed away on July 3, 2020 at his home, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on August 28, 1941 in New York, NY, Harry was the second of five children in the Hasselmann Family. Raised in Brooklyn, NY Harry was a die-hard Brooklyn Dodger, and New York Football Giants fan. One of Harry’s many “claims to fame “ was he attended the Greatest Game Ever, the 1958 NFL Championship Game at Yankee Stadium. Educated by Jesuits, Harry followed in his father's footsteps and attended Xavier High School in Manhattan. Following Xavier Harry matriculated through Boston College studying economics. Rounding out the Jesuit influence, he received his JD from Fordham University. While at Fordham, Harry married the love of his life Sharon Dennedy. Upon graduation from law school Harry was commissioned a Captain in the United States Army and proudly served in JAG at Ft. Meade Maryland until his honorable discharge in 1971. Harry raised a family of three daughters and one son primarily in Lincroft NJ. His career spanned four decades as legal counsel in the credit card industry. With stints at American Express, MasterCard and Visa, Harry was a pioneer in the processing and acquiring industry. Harry’s love for life was evident with his intellectual curiosity which culminated with a rare book collection of 4,000 antiquarian books. Harry was fortunate enough to travel the world exploring multiple continents and countless countries. However, Harry’s true love was his family: Wife, kids and his "ultimate passion” his nine grandchildren. Harry was well loved and will be missed. Harry is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Sharon (nee Dennedy); his children, Julie (Patrick) Vellender, Caroline (Douglas) Egbers, Betsey Hasselmann-Blankenship, and Peter (Anne) Hasselmann; his grandchildren, David Harry Blankenship, Alison and Anna Vellender, Kevin, Daniel and Irene Egbers, Jack, Kaitlyn and Avery Hasselmann; his sisters, Joan (Robert) Boetig and Eilene (John) Miller; as well as numerous niece, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry E. and Sarah Hasselmann, Sr.; his sister, Maryann (Robert) McAuliffe, and his brother, James H. (the late Doreen) Hasselmann. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Gary Sinise Foundation or Lurie Children's Hospital would be greatly appreciated. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 7, 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville (limited to 50 individuals at any given time with state mandates being followed).
