Obituary

Steven Virgil Coleman, age 65, of Clayton, Delaware passed away peacefully surrounded by the love and prayers of family and friends on Thursday, June 25, 2020 following a long and valiant battle with cancer.

Steven was born in 1955 and following his graduation from Christiana High School in 1973, enlisted with the United States Marine Corps, achieving the rank of Corporal.  He dutifully served his country until he was honorably discharged in 1980.  During his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Expert Rifle Badge.

Steven carried the military values of honor and duty throughout his life.  Upon returning to civilian life, he spent over 30 years serving his community as a postal carrier for the United States Postal Service.  Those lucky enough to be on his route knew him well and when he retired, many of them came out to celebrate with him.  Even in retirement, Steven found a way to continue to serve others as a bus driver with the Smyrna School District.

Steven’s greatest joy in life was family.  He was a dutiful son and big brother, a proud father and doting grandfather.  He enjoyed simple pleasures like riding his motorcycle, but fishing was his favorite pastime.  He was a true fisherman, like his father, and was always willing to share his boat or gear with anyone he loved.

Steven has been reunited with parents, Virgil A. and Miriam A. Coleman, formerly of Newark, Delaware, who preceded him in death. He is survived by four beloved children, Christopher Coleman of Newark, Delaware, Kimberly Mitchell of Dover, Delaware (and their mother Donna Gordun),  Kelly Coleman and Robert Cummings of Newark, Delaware (and their mother Sandy Coleman), as well as five precious grandchildren, Cody, Bryan, Emma, Jaymes and Ellie. Steven is also survived by four dear siblings, Clark Coleman and his wife Claire of Newark, Delaware, Susan Smith and her husband Ernie of Newark, Delaware, John Coleman and his wife Dana of Rockport, Maine and Linda Coleman of Smyrna, Delaware. Steve also leaves behind seven nieces and nephews and his two cherished dogs, Louie and Sophie.

Private services for friends and family will be held on July 6, 2020.  Steven will be laid to rest at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, Delaware.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 92 Read’s Way, Suite 205, New Castle, DE 19720 or Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675 (woundedwarriorproject.org).
