He was born December 29, 1939 in Phenix City, Alabama and had been a resident of Panama City since 1947. He was retired from the U.S. Navy where he served as a Damage Controlman officer. After retirement from the Navy, he went to work as an investigator with the Panama City Police Department. He then went to work as the Head of Security for the U.S. Marshall Service for the Federal Courthouse in Panama City. He was a member of the Hiland Park Baptist Church, the Cliff West Sunday School Class, the Ira Lindsey Sr. Masonic Lodge #365, the Shaddai Shrine Temple, the Hot Rod Unit, and the City of Panama City Code Enforcement Board. His greatest love was fishing, golfing, and watching his grandsons play baseball. He was preceded in death by his parents, James & Ella Lois Meadows, a son, Eddie Newsome, and a brother, William Clark Kittrell. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Louise Hughes Newsome; daughter, Judy Huntley; 3 sons, John Newsome Jr. and wife, Nicole; Ronnie Newsome, Donnie Newsome and wife, Teresa, all of Panama City, 8 grandchildren, Kylie Huntley, Logan Huntley, Ryan Newsome, Shelby Newsome, Trace Newsome, Corey Newsome, Michelle Newsome, Erika Newsome; brother, Ronald Newsome and wife, Judy; 2 sisters, Willa Sausman and husband, Phil; Mary Bradley; 2 stepbrothers, Bob Meadows and wife, Joan; Jimmy Meadows and wife, Lydia; special family, Sean Hodson, Kelly Hodson; mother-in-law, Nora Hughes; 2 brothers-in-law, George Hughes, James Hughes; sister-in-law, Harriett Hughes, special cousin, Grady Peterson and wife, Maurene, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Donald Pickerill officiating. Interment will be in the Live Oak Baptist Church Cemetery with Masonic and military rites conducted at the graveside. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday. Those desiring may make a contribution to the American Cancer Society in memory of John Newsome Sr.
