Derek James Stonechild

April 5, 1989 – June 21, 2020

It is with great sadness and sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of our dear Derek, who began his spiritual journey on Sunday June 21, 2020.

Derek is survived by his loving partner Natasha Oochoo; his children Wynstyn, Azalia and Elyza; siblings Tracey Shore, David Standingready/Acoose, Drake Stonechild, Gordon John Stonechild, Amanda Standingready, Colin Rae Stonechild; his kokum Lorna Standingready/Acoose; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Derek was predeceased by his paternal grandparents Margaret Stonechild and Victor Daniels; maternal grandfather Herman Standingready; parents Denise Standingready  and Drake Stonechild Sr.; brother Tyrone Stonechild; sister Noralee Nicole Standingready.

Derek was a kind hearted soul who was taught the traditional way of life on the Peepeekisis First Nation where his parents lived during his early years. Derek was a good father who loved his children and was a proud father of three. Derek followed in his Mother and Dad’s footsteps by showing kindness to all he met in his young life. He helped those who needed help of any kind. He was full of laughter and was a joy to spend time with as well as a good listener and someone to lean on in time of need.

Derek was a handyman and landscaper on the Muskowekwan First Nation, helping those in need.

Thank you to all the paramedics and health professionals at the Regina General Hospital who did all they could to help Derek.     

A wake will be held Saturday June 27, 2020  at 4:00 p.m. in the big tent at the school on Peepeekisis First Nation, SK.  Traditional and Christian Funeral Service will be held the following day, Sunday June at 11:00a.m. in the same location.

Derek will be laid to rest beside his father, Drake Stonechild Sr., in the Wanakapew United Church Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Conley Funeral Home, Fort Qu’Appelle, Wolseley, Wynyard and Raymore SK. 306-332-0555.
