Richard (Dickie) Laurel Smith Obituary

Richard "Dickie" Smith, 64, a native of Norfolk, VA, passed away peacefully in his daughter Laurel's home on the night of Sept. 15, 2008. Always the epitome of "cool" he went in his own way and on his own terms. Dickie proved that he controlled his own fate staying with his family and friends until he was ready to go. Born and raised in Norfolk, VA, Dickie retired from the Norfolk Fire Department in 1986 after 20 years of service and became a general contractor. He was a gentle and generous man who always put the needs of others before his own, he will be greatly missed. He is survived by his children, daughter, Laurel Smith Masterson, her husband Gary, and their children, Mitchell and Maysun, son, Richard Lloyd Smith, his wife, her son, Shane, and their children, Siara and Connor, daughter, Lea Smith, and her children, Alexia and Ariona, and his former wife, Janet B. Smith. He is also survived by his brothers, Butch, Warren and Everett Smith, and sisters, Pam Stone, Kathryn Prewitt, Lori Fletcher and Karen Mulholland. He was predeceased by his father, Everett Reeves Smith, mother, Edna Burkett Smith, brother, Robert B. Smith and partner, Kathi Thayer-Moore. We will honor his life at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel on Friday, September 19, 2008, at 2 p.m. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
