Percy Curry Obituary

Percy T. Curry Sr., “Toot” to some but affectionately called “Big Daddy” by us, was born July 30, 1949 in Saginaw, Michigan to Perry Teal and Essie Mae Curry. Big Daddy was called home to be with the Lord on June 23, 2020. Big Daddy was a life-long resident of Saginaw, Michigan, attending Carrollton Public Schools. He was employed at Kairos Detention Center as a Night Shift Supervisor, where he was referred to as “Mr. P”. He was also a faithful and dedicated high school Bus Driver for Saginaw Public Schools. Big Daddy was a loyal member of the S. 17th Street Church Of Christ, which was started in his parents living room over 70 years ago. He served as the facility manager for almost 30 years laboring tirelessly. He would later serve as Head Choir Director, Song Leader and a member of the Gospel Quartet group The Curry Family, consisting of his brother Teal and sisters Hazel and Beverly. Percy loved to travel to Atlanta, Georgia to visit his children and grandchildren and later referred to it as his second home. He resided there off and on for the past twelve years to be closer to his babies. During his time in Atlanta, he attended church at The Hillcrest Church of Christ under the leadership of Dr. Richard L. Barclay. Our Father enjoyed his life to the fullest, leaving no stone unturned. Big Daddy’s hobbies consisted of fishing, as he was very fond of the water and could always be found giving fishing lessons to his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed drag racing, watching a good western movie and cooking was also a favorite pastime. He was known for always having a secret recipe for everything but nothing could top his BBQ grilling and his Curry BBQ sauce. Our Father was also a trained auto mechanic for much of his early life as well as a hired pool shark. Those who knew him would agree that he was extremely funny, caring, loving, playful, freehearted, supportive, understanding and witty, in a Redd Foxx kind of way. All would agree that he was the best husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, nephew and friend you could ever ask for but most importantly, he was a MAN OF GOD!!! Big Daddy was predeceased by his parents, Perry Teal and Essie Mae Curry; brother, Jerome Curry; nephew, Daryl Genwright; father and mother-in-law, Obie and Gertis Washington; sisters-in-law, Gertis Diggs, Jackie Preston, Gloria George, Mary Thomas, Sadie Curry; granddog, Khan. Big Daddy leaves to celebrate his life and legacy his loving and devoted wife of 53 years Priscilla Ann Curry, whom he affectionately called “Sue”; four children, Toni (Roy) Carroll, Saginaw, Michigan, Terri (Earl) Baskfield, Atlanta, Georgia, Bryon (Margaret) Curry, San Antonio, Texas, Percy Jay (Sharon) Curry, Alpharetta, Georgia; grandchildren, Brittney Curry, Buckhead, Georgia, Elijah James Curry, San Antonio, Texas, Teddi Brubaker, Saginaw Michigan, Sydney, Earl Baskfield III, Atlanta, Georgia, Jaye, Jordyn Curry, Ashley, Amber, Sugarloaf, Georgia, DeAnna, DeNene, San Antonio, Texas; one great-granddaughter, Copper Reign Brubaker, Saginaw, Michigan; three granddogs, JJ, Bubbles and Toast; sisters, Hazel Dawkins, Beverly Curry, Saginaw, Michigan; brothers, Teal Curry, Saginaw, Michigan, Jake Curry, Clearwater, Florida; sisters and brothers-in-law whom he loved like his own family, Gloriadean Wilson, Lois Washington, Debra McKenzie, Obie Washington, Charlotte, North Carolina, Luegene, Jerry Washington, both of Saginaw, Michigan, Gilbert Preston; special nieces and nephews, Leslie Wilson Thomas, Tracy Horton, Chrystol Bandy, Chanda Smith, Tracy Kennedy, Jackie Thomas, Randy Thomas, Jabbar Thomas, Derrick Times, Craig Times, Chauncey Curry, Billy Curry, Clem Washington, Kim Washington, Connie Wiersma, Carmen Fletcher Schreem and Tammy Washington; many other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends, including two special friends, Lester Genwright and Frank Johnson.
