Dorothy Holmes Obituary

Dorothy M. Holmes Obituary Dorothy M. Holmes was born on December 29, 1928 to the late Lucille Woodhouse n Norfolk Virginia. Her late sister Roslyn Switzer was her only sibling. Ms. Holmes was a mother of (3) Children, the late Kevin and Stephan Holmes and surviving daughter Desiree Holmes. She was a caring and dotting grandmother to grandchildren, Darnell Holmes, Jermaine Rosser, Lamart Banks, Genaire Green and only granddaughter jasmine Taylor. God blessed her long enough in life to see (6) great-grandchildren. She loved and adored her nieces Piper Switzer and Tammy Hafler-Switzier who affectionally referred to her as Aunt Dot, great-nieces, Sade, Crystal, and Shantel. Her daughter-in-law, Barbara Rosser was an additional daughter, they always adored, respected and loved each other until the end whom she called “Niece” Her Son-In-Law, Darnell Brown she had nothing but kinds words to say, often saying “he’s such a nice man” If anyone knew Mrs. Holmes ‘she loved who she loved’. Her love was without convictions and she gave it to you straight but always conscious of your feelings. She was loving, knd and generous to her family but embraced all. Now let’s talk about Ms. Holmes because there is an unforgettable legacy of a woman who lived 91 years. Ms. Holmes was born in Virginia but grew up in Harlem, NY and indeed she loved Harlem. She attended Grammar School, Junior High and HS in Harlem. She worked for the Board of Education for more that (25) years and retired. She was politically savvy and knew most of the judges in the juridical system because she was consistently fighting for her rights. Ms. Holmes always told stories of the golden years n Harlem (Sugar Hill) where she lived and the years of fighting for social justice. She was a supporter of Malcolm X. attended his meetings along with her late mother. They were both social warriors of their times Ms. Holmes was smart and taught me. Nisey so many things in life as she did her children, grandchildren, nieces and great-nieces. She was a fan of classic movies and although would not admit it… romantic. She was a stunning young woman with a flair for fashion…just look at her pictures. She dressed and spoke the words of a Queen because in our eyes that’s what she was and always will be. Ms. Holmes, we will always miss you and never forget…You left your legacy in more ways than you could ever imagine. You taught us what could not be taught in schools and love that could not be brought. We know you are smiling down on us and saying what you’ve always said “keep living” and that we shall because you have given us a host of memories and love to keep us going. Rest in Peace Always
