Russell D. Lewis Obituary

Russell D. Lewis, 83, Casselton, N.D. (formerly Forman, N.D.), passed away on June 20, 2020 at his home following a brief battle with cancer, surrounded by his family and under the care of Hospice.

Russell Dean Lewis was born on April 29, 1937 in Aberdeen, S.D. to Thomas and Dora (Hein) Lewis.  He grew up in and graduated from Cogswell High School in 1956.  He joined the U. S. Air Force in 1957 serving as a cryptographic operator, being stationed in the Philippines and Japan.

On November 25, 1961 he married Carolyn McDaniel.  They lived in Forman where they raised their four children.  They recently moved to Casselton in December, 2018.  He was employed by Farmers Union Oil Company, International Multifoods as Assistant Manager, and before retiring, he worked for the City of Forman.

Russell was a “go-getter.”  He enjoyed all types of sports.  In his younger years, he raced snowmobiles with his brother, Stanley.  He could fix almost, if not anything that wasn’t working or broken.  He was known around town and amongst neighbors for mowing his lawn 3-4 times a week.  He loved tending to his garden and flowers.  He loved and cherished his family above anything else.

He served as an E.M.T. and volunteer fire fighter while residing in Forman.  He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Forman, and most recently became a member of Martin’s Lutheran Church in Casselton.

Russell is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn; daughters, Lori (Brian) Wittich, Otter Tail, Minn., Kathy (Mike) Sundquist, Casselton, N.D.; sons, Shane (Kari) Lewis, Minneapolis, Minn., Cale (Joy) Lewis, Casselton, N.D.; grandchildren, Jami (Rob) McCleary, Jessica (Cody) Arth, Jenica (Nate) Adams, Matthew Sundquist and Benjamin Sundquist, Brooklyn Lewis and Grayson Lewis; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Stanley Lewis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Willard, Norman, and Gilbert; and sisters Lyla Klefstad, Eunice Clow, and Donna Zito.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private family Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, June 26, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. in West Funeral Home, Casselton, N.D.

Interment will be at Fargo National Cemetery, rural Harwood, N.D., at a later date.
