Arsene Bernaille

Arsene (Adam) Bernaille was born on May 17, 1937 in the Hamlet of Fort Chipewyan, Alberta. Arsene was a kind-hearted person who loved his family and friends. He was a good hunter, trapper, brother, son, and papa. He enjoyed cooking for this friends and family. Arsene was very good at making banana cream pie and raisin pie; which he made for our big celebrations, Christmas and Easter. A Dene Elder who sat on Treaty 8 Committee and ACFN Elders Advisory Committee, Arsene was a strong advocate for our Treaty Rights, Land and Traditions. He was not afraid to speak his mind as everyone knows. Arsene was a self-taught fiddle player. He enjoyed practicing on his violin. In the 1970's he learned how to play "Diggy Diggy Lo." It became a huge success for him. People loved his music, so he was invited to many parties, weddings, and dances. Arsene also competed in local and other talent shows. People loved to dance to his music. While not named "I Know" when he was born, Arsene somehow became known throughout his life as the "I KNOW" Man. It was his favourite saying at the end of his sentences. I wish so much you wouldn't cry, the way you did today, While thinking of the many things, we didn't get to say. I know how much you love me, as much as I love you, And each time you think of me, I know you'll miss me too. When tomorrow starts without me, don't think we're far apart, for every time you think of me, I'm right there in your heart.
