Obituary

Melvin Jan Matulewicz, age 68, passed away peacefully, Friday morning, December 11, 2015, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Mel was born February 6, 1947, in Hamtramck, Michigan to the late John S. and Mary (Krosnowski) Matulewicz. Mel graduated from Roseville High School in 1965 and attended Macomb Community College in Roseville before transferring to Northern Michigan University in 1968. Mel always laughed when he told the story of moving to Marquette and being very surprised to find where Marquette was located; originally thinking it was just above the Mackinac Bridge. He completed his Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology and his Master of Arts Degree in Guidance and Counseling at Northern Michigan University. Mel met his future wife, Terrye L. Pence when he interviewed her for a position in the residence halls. They were married three years later on July 13, 1974, in Flint, Michigan. Mel was employed by Northern Michigan University for 39 years as a Residence Hall Director, Assistant Director of Auxiliary Services, and retired in 2009 as Senior Administrator of Technology and Operation. His most valued roles in life however, were as Husband, Father, Grampy and Hockey Dad. Mel was well known for his quirky sense of humor that made a person laugh and be puzzled at the same time. Due to his love of computers and technology he was often sought out for advice or to solve a computer problem. Mel is survived by his wife of 41 years, Terrye L. (Pence); his "favorite eldest son," Matthew J. Matulewicz (Kimberly) and "favorite youngest son," Timothy K. Matulewicz (Sharon) and two precious grandsons, Tyler M. and Dylan J. Matulewicz all of Marquette; father-in-law, James F. Pence (Patricia); brother-in-law, Randy J. Pence (Jean) and nephew, Bret A. Pence all of Swartz Creek, MI.; sister-in-law, Robin (Stephen) MacConnell of Cincinnati, OH; aunts, Delores Eckert, Anne (Richard) Frederick and Nancy Norris as well as numerous cousins. Mel was preceded in death by his parents, his younger sister, Carole A. Matulewicz and mother-in-law, Virginia M. Walker. Mel's family would like to thank the medical staff of the University of Michigan Hospital as well as the U.P. Home Health Care and Hospice team. Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are kindly asked to consider U. P. Home Health and Hospice, 1414 W. Fair Ave., Marquette, MI 49855. Friends may call at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. and again on Friday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. where a memorial service will be held in the funeral home on Friday at 11:30 with the Rev. Kristi Hintz of First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will take place in the Park Cemetery. Immediately following the service, a luncheon will take place in the Marquette Township Hall, 1000 Commerce Drive, Marquette.
