Fredia E. Sconiers-Broadnax Topeka, Kansas Obituary

Fredia E. Sconiers-Broadnax

Fredia Sconiers-Broadnax was the youngest of ten children born to Willie and Nellie Sconiers on September 10, 1937, in Hartford, Alabama. In 1942, the family moved to Panama City, Florida and she lived there until she graduated from Rosenwald High School in 1955. Fredia was a member of Holy Temple Church of God and Christ, where she and her family played a very active role. After Fredia graduated, she married Sydney Pope and from this union two children were born, Valerie Ann and Sydney Paul. Fredia’s husband was in the United States Air Force. The family lived in various cities across the country. Settling in Chicago, Illinois, Fredia held accounting positions at Montgomery Wards and the Standard Oil Company. In 1972, Fredia moved to Topeka, Kansas and was employed by the Topeka Housing Authority, where she held positions as a Project Manager, Occupancy Specialist, and Office Manager. The Menninger Foundation was her second employer in Topeka. She started as a Mental Health Technician and then returned to her love of accounting as an Insurance Account Manager. Fredia retired from the Menninger Foundation and still full of energy, she started working for H&R Block during tax season. Fredia has always had a flair for fashion and decided to follow her passion to Dillard’s, where she worked for ten years as a top salesperson in the Women’s Department. Fredia married Elsbery "E.L." Broadnax, Sr., on September 29, 1994. They attended Lane Street Church of God, and later attended Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Prior to E.L.’s illness, they enjoyed traveling, visiting family, and discussing politics. Fredia and E.L were married for eighteen years until his passing on Tuesday, August 14, 2012. Fredia demonstrated a strong work ethic and spirit of giving back to her community. She worked with Meals on Wheels, visited nursing homes, and provided transportation for the elderly. As an avid supporter of Asbury Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, she tithed her time, talents and offerings. Freidia was the Chair of the Usher Board and she served on the Nominating Leadership Development Committee. She loved the Lord, studied His word, offered her vocal gift and strongly believed in the power of prayer. On Saturday, June 6, 2020, Fredia departed this life surrounded by her family. Even though her son, Paul Pope, her parents, and her nine siblings preceded her in death, she is survived by: her daughter, Valerie Black (Phillip) of Gig Harbor, Washington; two grandchildren, Tanika Seals of Stockbridge, Georgia, and Marina Martin of Atlanta, Georgia; and three great-grandchildren, Antwan, Anthony, and Andryanna. She also leaves to mourn a special nephew, Wallace Knight of East Orange, New Jersey, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
