Frank J. Moran Saint Clair Shores, Michigan Obituary

Frank J. Moran

Frank J. Moran, M.D. passed away peacefully on June 6, 2020 at home in Grosse Pointe Shores with family by his side. He was born on March 21, 1932 in Detroit to Frank P. and Mary Clarice Moran. Frank is survived by his beloved wife, Katherine, whom he married in 1993, and Dr. Henry G. and Holly Bryan, Dr. Mary Lynn Moran, Dr. Michael F. and Diane Moran, Christa M. Roy, CW2 Troy P. and Dr. Linda L. Kosai, Linda E. Moran, and Michelle Fierens as well as grand nieces and nephews. Of a kind and generous nature to a fault, Frank will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Frank attended McFarlane Elementary School, Mackenzie High School, and graduated from Wayne State University, College of Liberal Arts, in June 1953 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Prior to graduating from Wayne State University Medical School in June 1964, Frank interned at Mount Carmel Mercy Hospital from 1956 to 1957 with a residency at Kresge Eye Institute and Detroit Receiving Hospital from 1959 to 1961. As a Board-certified ophthalmologist he practiced in the Fisher Building in Detroit, and later in the clinic he built in Livonia, MI, for more than thirty years. He was associated with St. Mary Hospital, Livonia, MI, and Jennings Memorial and Hutzel Women's Hospitals in Detroit. Prior to his retirement, Frank volunteered his medical experience in Sierra Leone, Haiti, India, and Africa. At the age of ten Frank had a newspaper route in Detroit, and became an early entrepreneur when he spent several summers on the family farm in Maidstone, Ontario, Canada, harvesting and selling vegetables grown on the farm which his family owned and operated since 1840. Around the same time, Frank began his lifelong interest in classical music and took violin lessons at the age of eight. While in high school Frank played the trombone in a band of fellow students, and performed at proms and local musical events. He and Katherine loved the arts and supported the Detroit Institute of Art, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Michigan Opera Theatre, the Hilberry and Bonstelle Theatres. They especially enjoyed driving to Stratford and Niagara-on-the-lake in Canada for the plays. New York City, NY and London, England, were favorite destinations for attending art auctions and cultural events. An avid and expert skier, Frank could ski down any slope, especially the moguls, whether in Aspen, CO, Boyne Mountain, MI, or the Alps of Italy and France. Gardening, Golfing, and Boating were also activities Frank indulged in along with his participation in several Detroit Free Press Marathons where he finished as "he also ran." Frank was preceded in death by his siblings Joan J. Bryan and John S. Moran. Please be mindful to wear facial masks and that social distancing will be in effect. We are still under State orders of 10 people within the Funeral Home at a time.

My earliest memories of Frank were when I was about 10 years old and Frank and my father joined the same ski group. We went on many ski trips together from MI to Europe, but my favorite was Jackson Hole WY because it became a yearly tradition for the group to meet there.... Continue Reading
