Clair Henry Gunther Obituary

Clair was born on December 27, 1932 to Claire and Mary (Marx) Gunther in LeMars, Iowa, the oldest of seven children. He graduated from LeMars High School in 1950, then attended Westmar College for one year before joining the Navy where he served four years during the Korean War. In 1956, he returned to LeMars and Westmar College. After graduation in 1959, he taught at Ida Grove, Iowa for four years before moving to Woodbine, Iowa where he taught Industrial Arts for 33 years, retiring in 1992. When the Woodbine Post Office needed a temporary worker, the postmaster asked Clair if he would help out by working before and after school. He retired in 1994 after 30 years of “helping out.” While at Westmar, Clair met Beverly Begg whom he married on June 11, 1960. They moved to Greeley, Colorado where Clair attended Colorado State College and received a Master’s Degree in secondary education. A year after moving to Woodbine, Clair and Beverly purchased an apple orchard, which was “another form of education.” Clair was a 63-year member of the American Legion, belonged to the Masonic Lodge and Kiwanis Club, served as the sponsor for the Key Club and leader of Boy Scout Webelos for many years. He was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church, serving on the church council, trustees, and other committees numerous times. In 1994, they retired to the Ozarks where Clair enjoyed his new friends, playing cards, golfing, boating, and auctions. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family whom he loved dearly. Clair died suddenly on June 6th. He is survived by his wife, Beverly; children: Lori and (Ben) Johnson, Gary and (Luz) Gunther, Geri and (Ray) Cunningham, and Teri Gunther; grandchildren: Claire and (Matthew) McMillin, Alex and (Michelle) Johnson, Sean and (Heidi) Phillips, Morgan Johnson, and Sharlee Gunther; great-grandchildren: Owen and Ella McMillin. Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Friday, June 12, 2020 held at the Blue Eye United Methodist Church, Pastor Jack Smith officiating.
