James Taylor Gaffney Obituary
James (Jim, Jamie) Taylor Gaffney died peacefully at home on May 26, 2020 surrounded by his loving family.
Born and raised in Binghamton, NY, he attended local elementary and middle schools; he then attended and graduated from Deerfield Academy,
He received his BA in history and Russian studies, cum laude, from Princeton University (Class of 1969) and his Master of Science in Natural Resources Policy and Planning from Cornell University. Following graduation, he was commissioned in the U Army and served as First Lieutenant in the Intelligence branch of the US Army during Vietnam.
He moved to NJ to become the Executive Director of the Stonybrook Millstone Watershed Association for 5 years , where he addressed major environmental issues, was instrumental in protecting the waterways, setting up a long standing environmental education program and establishing (with fellow trustees) the first organic farm in the area in 1984. Later he worked for the NJDEP Commission in water policy and planning for the Passaic River watershed. He was active locally as a Treasurer of the Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space and was chairman of the Environmental Commission in Pennington for 7 years.
He was a long-time member and served as treasurer of the Princeton Ski and Sailing Club.
Son of the late Miller S. and Adelaide S. Gaffney, he was predeceased by his nephew, Andy S. Gaffney, and his sister- in -law, Nancy B Gaffney. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Coyle Gaffney, and his children, Jeffrey T. Gaffney (Georgina) of Chappaqua, NY and Megan A. Gaffney of Framingham, Ma., his brothers David M. Gaffney and family and Philip W. Gaffney and family.
Burial will be private, and a Memorial Service will take place in the fall.
