Laura Wynne Gensel Obituary

Laura Wynne Gensel, 88 beautiful years of life, peacefully passed away Monday morning, June 1, 2020, at her daughter and son-in-law’s home in Berwick, PA from end stage dementia. Her life began on December 29, 1931 in Berwick, PA, born to Maude & Irvin Garrison. She was devoted to God & her family; both were always at the center of her life, and nothing came before either of them. She married her husband, Albert M. Gensel Sr. and raised 6 children. She was a full time caregiver, always investing her love and her time in those she held dear. She enjoyed cooking and baking because it brought her family around the table and was a tradition so important to her. Sunday dinners were her specialty, cooking for 20+ family members EVERY Sunday. She was a hard worker; no task was too big. She would be the first person to step in to help with anything that needed done. She was the most kind and pure soul our family has ever known. She loved deeply and helped us all embrace the little things in life--you didn’t need to be rich to have a rich and full life. If you knew her, you loved her. If you met her once, you loved her. That's just the beautiful soul she was. She never met another human she didn’t like nor was an ill word ever spoken of others. She had the most amazing smile--you didn’t often see her without it. She had a contagious laugh and a sparkle in her eyes that drew others to her. She was a sister, an aunt, a daughter, a wife, a sister-in-law, a mother, a mother-in-law, a grandmother, a great grandmother, and a friend. Each of these, her life’s greatest accomplishments. She enjoyed drinking sweet tea and playing cards with her best friend, Eulee Shoemaker. She was a devoted member of the Assembly of God church in Shickshinny Valley. She was a member of TOPS and enjoyed the friendships she made there. She loved music and could often be found with the radio turned up, singing along to her favorite singer, George Jones. She enjoyed the peaceful still of life on the mountain in Shickshinny, PA where she raised her family. She also loved the bustle of a full house--her home was an open door to friends, family, and even those she had just met. All were welcome. Even in the last days of her life here on Earth, she was trying to comfort us and continued to be that bright light in our lives. Not even dementia could diminish the sparkle in her eyes and the love she had for us. During the times we are going through right now in this world, we are so very blessed and grateful to have been able to be by her side and care for her as she has always cared for us. And boy oh boy, was she loved! She was preceded in death by her parents Maude and Irvin Garrison; her husband, Albert Gensel Sr.; her brothers Milliard Garrison, William Garrison, and Paul Garrison; her sister Mary Alice Seigfried and her twin sister, Lucy Mae Garrison ; and her granddaughter, Myranda Klug. She will be immensely missed by her surviving relatives: her sister, Iva Stout, Shickshinny, PA; her sons Rodger Gensel of Warminster, PA and Albert Gensel Jr. of Nanticoke, PA; her daughters Ruth Johnson of Lansdale, PA, Lucy Hoffman of Berwick, PA, Rebecca Hartman of Nescopeck, PA and Amy Quick of Berwick, PA; her 11 grandchildren; and her 9 great grandchildren. A viewing will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2020 at Mayo Funeral Home, 77 N. Main St., Shickshinny, PA. Viewing hours will be from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Services will be held at Sorber Cemetery, Reyburn, PA at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking you to make a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association, via alz.org, in honor of Laura, our loving Mom, GG, and Nana.
