Al was born May 19, 1944 in Elgin, North Dakota to Alvin and Arlene (Ketterling) Kramer. He attended the University of North Dakota. He owned a series of businesses in the Bismarck area starting the early 1970s. Al was a loving father to nine children Kelly, Kristin (Alex), Tammi (Chad) , Michelle, Brooke (Brian), Jonathan, Mckenzie (Wally), Abigayle, and Jeremiah. And grandfather to Kade, Talyn (Kryssy), Taysha, Dylan, China, Joran, Kali, Drew and Oakley, and great grandfather to Braxton. Al also had a special relationship with his son in law Brian that included beer and politics. Al had a passion for books, politics, tobacco, fine liquor, traffic, and the outdoors. Al loved to read and did so voraciously on almost all topics. Among his favorites were the Twilight Series and the biography of Kaiser Wilhelm II. Al found politics immensely enjoyable and worked in local politics for 3 decades. Al had many fond memories of campaigning against his friend Claire Aubel in North Dakota and working with Senator Mark Andrews. Al enjoyed tobacco products from a young age and used them throughout his life. In his later years he was ever popular at Miller Pointe amongst staff for his love of pipe smoking outdoors with the staff. Al enjoyed fine alcohol and was famous for his love of martinis in the afternoon. One of Al’s lesser known hobbies was driving in traffic. He loved just driving in traffic and people watching, something that became annoying when he was a passenger with others. Al loved the outdoors through various means in his life. During his youth it was spent on horseback at his Uncle John’s ranch, in his young adult life it was spent hunting and camping. He fondly remembers winter camping in the river bottoms(in old age he considered himself shortsighted for this practice), and in his later life it was spent with his children, boating, fishing, on the beach, and watching baseball. Al was preceded in death by his father Alvin, his mother Arlene, and his infant sister. He is survived by his children, grandchildren and Zimmerman and Ketterling cousins.
