Walter S. Garrett Obituary

On May 28, 2020, Walter S. Garrett Jr. passed away at the age of 86. Walter was born in Eugene, Oregon on December 17, 1933, the son of Gladys and Walter Garrett Sr. He was a loving husband, father of six children, grandfather to twelve grandchildren, brother to two sisters and an uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. Walter attended the University of Oregon, participating in the ROTC program and ultimately received a BA in Communications in 1956. In 1947 Walter was in the movie, “Rachel and the Stranger”, with Robert Mitchum and Loretta Young. The movie production company was owned by Howard Hughes, so technically, Howard Hughes was his first boss. Walter served in the U.S. Army as a Communications Officer. He was stationed at Fort Lewis, WA; Germany; and Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, where he met the love of his life, Mary Louise Hounihan. On April 20, 1963, Walter and Mary Lou were married. In August 1963, he received an honorable discharge as a Captain. After the Army, Walter worked for a short time at Westinghouse. He spent the majority of his career at the National Security Agency in Fort Meade, MD from which he retired in 1990. Walter then worked part-time for H&R Block preparing tax returns. He was deeply engrained in the Odenton Community. He raised six children there, served as commissioner of GORC baseball, and in later years, was president of genealogy at the local senior center. He was a lifelong parishioner at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church. “Pops” as he was called by some of his children, was a highly intelligent man who loved history and telling a good story. He also loved maps and geography, genealogy, reading the newspaper, all things German—or from Germany, model trains, making pizza (on pans from Germany), boating, and camping. One of his favorite pastimes was bargain shopping, especially for groceries. Walter is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Lou Garrett, his two sisters, Jane Denini (Seattle, WA), and Sue Johnston (Oldsmar, FL), his six children, Patty (Mike) Noon of Gambrills, MD, Andy (Shari) Garrett of Pasadena, MD, Tim (Rhonda) Garrett of Ocoee, FL, Cathy (Bob) Novak of Mechanicsville, MD, Susie (Jonathan) Nichols of Crofton, MD, and Rob (Monique) Garrett of Timonium, MD. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Lisa, Chris, Megan, Jessie, Bobby, Cameron, April, Kyle, Kirstin, Cassidy, Connor, and Nolan. At this time, services will be private due to the restrictions in place by the State of Maryland. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake.
