Barbara Lagunas Obituary

Barbara Jean Lagunas passed away on Wednesday May 27th, 2020. At the time of her passing, Barbara was at her home in the care of her daughters and took her last breaths surrounded by family and friends. In her 74 years on this Earth, Barbara touched and inspired the lives of many people. She was born on June 10, 1945 to Catarino and Angelica “Mary” Lagunas in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Her family relocated to Greeley, Colorado when Barbara was a small child. It was in this town she attended Hazelton Elementary school and remained in that same city where she built a life and raised her two daughters and her two nephews. She grew up on a farm and as a teenager all through high school she did farm labor to help support her family. She later graduated from Greeley High School on June 3rd, 1965. Hard work and education were always a high priority for Barbara. Although a single parent of two daughters Beatrice and Irene and her nephews Joe and Thomas, she continued to advance her skillset. After graduation she began working at Billie Martinez Elementary School as a Teacher’s Aide in 1974. Here she made many lifelong friends and pioneered the school’s first computer lab. In her role as a computer technician Barbara taught children of all grades computer fundamentals and typing. In addition to her day position, Barbara began teaching night computer classes at the school as well. These classes provided an opportunity for the parents of her students to improve their English dialog and reading in addition to learning computer fundamentals. Her passion was always teaching, but she had a talent for doing hair also. In 1981 Barbara attended Highland Hills Beauty Academy to receive a Cosmetology License. For many years she worked three separate jobs to provide for her family. After 31 years in education, Barbara retired from Billie Martinez Elementary School. She spent her years of retirement enjoying time with her family. She helped care for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She spent countless hours working on her homemade crafts. She loved painting, drawing, sewing, and embroidering gifts for her family and friends. During holidays she enjoyed baking pies and cookies. She lived her life everyday for her family. She ensured they knew they were loved, and she was proud of them. Her legacy is full of incredible lessons for us all to live by. Amongst them, her most important was, always forgive and love your family with your whole heart. She believed that the most important mark you could leave on this world was the way you treated people. Everyone who knew her could attest to her kind heart, generosity, and great sense of humor. She will forever be missed. Barbara’s spirit is carried on by her two daughters Beatrice Castilleja of Greeley, Colorado and Irene (Jose) Chaparro of Edgewood, New Mexico. A nephew Joe Lagunas of Greeley, Colorado. Three grandchildren Dwan (Jarrod) Allord of Tucson, Arizona, Ronnie “Buddah” Lopez Jr. of Greeley, Colorado, and Deshawnda Chaparro of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Two great-grandchildren Gilberto Allord and Alexandria Ybarra. She also had two surviving sisters Efren “Genavie” (Gilbert) Griego and Sally (Nick) Martinez of Evans, Colorado and an extended family of relations and friends from every walk of life She is preceded in death by her parents, a nephew Thomas Christopher Martinez and her grandson Nayd “Nana” Chaparro.
