Geraldine "Gerrie" F. Van Dyke Obituary

Geraldine Faith Van Dyke age 86, was welcomed into Heaven on May 22, 2020. She passed peacefully from her home in Hood River, Oregon surrounded by her family. Gerrie is survived by her sisters Darlene Briggs and Jean Hultquist, her son Ralph Van Dyke, her daughters Kimberly Swan and Kathy Fleig, nine grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Born in 1934 in Sioux City, Iowa to Johannes and Edna Van Dyke, she was the 6th of 7 children. Raised in a Christian home, she held on to her faith and shared the love of God in her humble way of service everywhere she lived. She came to Portland, Oregon in the early 1950’s abd worked at Kress Department Store for 17 years. She then went to work for the Postal Service from which she retired after 30 years in 1999. She moved to Hood River in 2007. She had a servants heart and that played out in many ways in the churches she attended the communities she lived in. She taught Sunday School, served in the nursery, worked in the church office, and was a church council member among many other things. As a greeter she had the loving nickname of “The Gum Lady” because she always had some fun form of chewing gum to give to children. Gerrie also served her communities by volunteering at many places in Portland and Hood River. Her gift of caring was a blessing to countless people and most of all to her family. She kept the family connections going strong with phone calls, cards, and gifts. She always picked the perfect Hallmark card, or two to confirm her love and appreciation. Her smiling face easy laugh will be missed by all whom she loved and served graciously and generously. Her humble, gentle and intelligent nature will long be remembered and cherished.
