Robert L. Miles Obituary

Robert L. Miles was born on April 25,1935 in Crewe, VA to the late Emmett Andrew Miles and Inez Virginia Watson-Miles. He departed this life on Saturday, May 23, 2020 at Christiana Season Hospice. Bobby and his siblings were raised together with four cousins, who later became their sisters, and inseparable. These sisters where Florence (Flo), Beatrice (Bea), Christine (Kitty), and Shirley. He was educated in the Nottaway County Public School System of Crewe, VA. He was an avid athlete playing baseball at Foster High School in Blackstone, VA and he also played with the screaming Eagles in Crewe, VA. Bobby enlisted in the U.S. Army on June 28, 1955, serving until he received an honorable discharge on May 3, 1957. One of his first jobs was a furniture delivery driver in the Tri-State area for a company named Tycoy. After doing that for a few years he drove the school bus for the Harvey and Knott Company. Finally, before his career with The City of Wilmington from which he retired after 46 years of service, he drove a dump truck for a family company called Harvey and Harvey. Miles as his former workers and co-workers called him, started with The City of Wilmington (Public Works) in 1966. He worked for as he would tell you a total of forty-six years ten months and four days. Starting off as a chucker, but not for long, he quickly rose to foremen, then to supervisor. Here he formed a cohesive group of individuals that became his second family. Robert and Ethelene a love story, were together for over forty-seven years. They enjoyed traveling together up and down the east coast. Bobby would drive up to Connecticut, making stops in upstate New York, and Northern New Jersey or as far south as Baltimore, Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia. There they would spend time with family. When at home you could find him sitting at the kitchen table playing solitaire, watching CNN, sports, or those old westerns. “Blip” as his siblings would call him was a family man. All his family had to do was call and he was there, whether; it was a wedding, birthday celebrations, a game of piddy-pat/pokeno, family reunions, fundraisers, to visit the sick, a funeral, or just even to support a family member, friend. Or foe he was THERE!!! What he heard was Robert, Uncle Bobby, Pop Pop, Blip, Pops, Father Dear, Robert Miles, or Miles - “We Need You”, and he was there. He loved family!! On August 24, 2011 The City of Wilmington Public Works Department had a ceremony to honor Robert by naming their call center “The Robert Lee Miles Call Center”. Robert was preceded in death by his parents: Emmett Andrew Miles and Inez Virginia Watson Miles, step-mother: Maggie C Miles, three brothers: Kenneth L. Miles, Junior Green, and Calvin Dickson, and two sisters Beatrice Walls and Shirley Anne Jackson, and one daughter: Judith Ringgold-Watts. Robert leaves to cherish his memory a loving wife: Ethelene Ringgold-Miles; three daughters: Jacqueline Edwards and Jeffery Ann Johnson (Larry) of Wilmington, DE, Veronica Long (Anthony) of Upper Marlboro, MD; four sons: Robert Evans of Conway, SC, Lawrence Ringgold, Robert Jones and Kenny Jervey all of Wilmington, DE; two brothers: Andrew Miles (Angeles) of Palm Bay, FL, Maynard L (Jack) Miles of Colombia, MD; four sisters: Florence Agnew of Wilmington, DE, Christine Oliver of Norfolk, VA, Joyce Williams of Baltimore, MD and Beatrice Grinage of Parksley, VA; thirteen grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren, four sisters-in-law: Annette Simmons (George) and Lillie Mae Louis of Fayetteville, NC; Yvonne Fann of Waley, GA and Ella M. Smith of Bridgeport, CT; three special cousins: Anita Thompson, Shirley Gilliam, and Dottie Mae Harried(Herman) all of Baltimore, MD and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and Friends.
