She worked in various key positions for years, first at Hudson Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and then with The State of New Jersey Department of Insurance, Division of Weights and Measures. In 1982 she accepted a position with the Township of Montclair, New Jersey, Building Department as the person who analyzed the blueprints and issued the construction permits; she eventually rose to the position of Control Person. Then in 1994 she upgraded to a different section within the Building Department as a Property Maintenance, Housing and Zoning Inspector. She also held New Jersey State certifications as a Multiple Dwelling and Hotel Inspector, and a State of New Jersey Fire Official. After 25+ years with the Township of Montclair, she retired in 2007. Audrey was also a cancer survivor in 2010 that resulted in an above knee amputation, which did not slow her. Cathy met, who was to eventually become her second husband, Jarvis E Hawley, in 1990. Jarvis, although he was a Montclair Firefighter, he was also temporarily working for the Township as a Property Maintenance, Housing, and Zoning Inspector next to Cathy's office. Their first meeting did not mesh, he was not impressed and did not like her at all. It took 7 months for her to develop a casual talking friendship with him. She prevailed, and they became the best of inseparable friends. People would tease them by saying that when they only saw one, they would only have to look in any straight line to see the other. Audrey and Jarvis got engaged in 1993. In 1994 they became members of Saint Matthew A.M.E. Church, Orange, New Jersey. In 1998, they were married by Rev. Reginald T. Jackson at St. Matthew A.M.E. Church. Cathy loved to make jewelry, cook, genealogy, camping, walking, a master Christmas decorator, trying out all new restaurants, and planting flowers. Most of all she loved traveling with her husband, Jarvis. They have been to 17 different countries. Also, they have driven across country twice and Cathy has completed 49 States with only Alaska left, which was planned in July of 2019, but her stroke delayed that. One of her fondest memories in traveling was when her grandson, D'Andre, went cross country in 2008 with Grandma and Grandpa, and at age 10, D'Andre completed 48 states. Audrey (Cathy), is survived by her best friend of almost 30 years, her loving and devoted husband of 22+ years, Jarvis; her daughter, Nurisha V Jones, her son, Irving Kyle Jones, 2 grandsons: D'Andre and I. Kyle, Jr., her sister, Virginia Cross, her mother in law, 3 brother in laws, 2 sister in laws, and host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and admirers. She is predeceased by her mother and father, her 2 brothers: Samuel Cross and Richard Cross; her 2 sisters: Muriel Yancey and Joan Lambert; and her former husband, Irving L. Jones. In lieu of flowers send all donations to the N.J. Amputee Walking School or your favorite cancer or stroke research organization, or to the church of your faith and belief. After all the pandemic debacle is fully over, a memorial may be planned at a much later to be determined date.
