On Sunday, May 24, 2020, Kyung Ook “Ken” Yoon, M.D., loving husband and father of two children, passed away at age 73 and entered the loving arms of Jesus.

Dr. Yoon was born on October 5, 1946 in Inchon, South Korea to Soon Ae Yoon and Yong Ki Yoon.  He received his bachelors degree and medical degree at Yonsei Severance Medical School, South Korea, completing in 1971.  He served 3 years as a South Korean Army medical officer.  On May 30, 1974, he married Eun Joo “Grace” Yoon, and they emigrated to the United States.  After completing a medical internship in Maryland and residency at Mt Sinai Hospital in Elmhurst, NY, he practiced Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation for 40 years, the majority of which was in Tuscaloosa, AL.  Ken and Grace raised a son, Harold, and a daughter, Shirley.

Growing up in the ashes of the Korean War, Dr. Yoon knew poverty, and the value of the dollar and of hard work.  He also loved to live life to the fullest.  He maintained an active lifestyle, playing tennis every week until his knees eventually gave out.  Undeterred, he took up golf, yoga, and swimming, and his neighbors were familiar seeing him taking walks no matter the weather.  Music was a great passion, and he sang in the church choir.  He enjoyed the great outdoors, taking his family camping and hiking throughout the National Parks, and watching birds out the backyard.  When he finally was able to take a step back from work in his later years, he traveled the world, learning about history, culture, and science.  Finally, his faith in God was the foundation of his identity and purpose.  He was known for his gentle and quiet way, always ready with a joke and a laugh. 

Dr. Yoon was preceded in death by his parents, and his daughter Shirley Esther Yoon.  He is survived by his wife Grace, his son Harold (Elaine) Yoon, grandsons Jonathan and Linus, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.  A private funeral service with immediate family will be held on Friday, May 29th, 2020 at Renner Wikoff Chapel, 1900 S Philo, Urbana.  Cards may be sent to 110 Stony Creek Overlook, Noblesville IN 46060, and memorials may be made to Severance Alumni Association (Roslyn NY) or the charity of your choice.
