Nyrita J. Myers

Nyrita Jackson Myers was born September 2, 1948 in Florence, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late James Jackson, Sr. and Sylvia Williams Jackson. She received her heavenly wings on May 23, 2020. Nyrita married Nathaniel Myers, Jr. on April 24, 1971 and together they made their home in Florence, South Carolina. She was a faithful and devoted member of Trinity Baptist Church her entire life. A graduate of Wilson High School (1966) and Francis Marion University (1971); Nyrita was an avid life-long learner who immersed herself in learning new things daily. She eventually went to work for her alma mater where she became the first African American female to serve as the Director of Housing for Francis Marion University. Always one willing to serve, she continued beyond her retirement to lend time and talents to Capstone Management, and Pee Dee Healthy Start. Nye (as she was affectionally called) was involved in several community and service organizations such as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., National Council of Negro Woman, Minerva Center Foundation, Florence Area Literacy Council-tutor, Facilitator for Building Bridges, Chamber of Commerce Program on Cultural Diversity, Florence County Caregivers Advisory, American Legion Auxiliary. Some past and present professional affiliations include: South Carolina Housing Officers Associations, Southeast Association of Housing Officers, South Carolina College Personnel Association, FMU President’s Staff Advisory, African American Faculty/Staff Coalition, Florence County Coalition for Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Prevention, ROAR Initiative on Domestic Violence and Date Rape. Left to cherish her beautiful memories are husband Nathaniel along with two children Mark (John) and Mitzi and possibly her greatest joy, granddaughter Mia Simone. Nyrita was the fifth of six brothers & sisters: Louvenia (Franklin) Grant (deceased), Lillian (Sylvester) Gardner, Hershal (Marie) Jackson (both deceased), Herman Jackson, Orlando (Jacqueline) Jackson, two half-brothers James (Marie) Jackson, Jr. (both deceased), William Jackson (deceased) and many nieces, nephews, sisters and brothers-in-law and a host of friends all near and far. I've known Nyrita since we were in elementary school. She was always a nice, kind and positive thinking person. I think of her as the "voice of reason". My condolences to her family and friends.
