Dr. Cherian P. Mathews, age 84, passed away in Chicago, Illinois on May 22, 2020 with family by his side. He was born in 1935, as the third son of the late P.C. Mathews and Rachel P Mathews of Maramon in Kerala, India. Dr. Mathews was affectionately known as Pappen by his friends and family, and leaves behind his eldest brother Dr. P.M.(Kocheri) Mathews and 3 younger brothers, Joseph (Sowmini) Mathews, Samuel (Mary) Mathews, and Dr. Alexander (Shyla) Mathews. He was predeceased by his older brother P. M Abraham and younger sister Dr. Mary John, who are survived by their spouses Molly Abraham and John Thomas. Pappen is survived by his dear wife Manorama, with whom he shared 59 blessed years, as well as their four children Lavanya (Ralph) Kling, Bina (Bill) Yit, Mathews (Nandini) Cherian and Sunitha (Abraham) Thomas, nine grandchildren Ashley and Michael Kling, Sierra and Cherian Yit, Zach, Paul and Sonia Cherian, Sara and Serena Thomas. An accomplished physician, he attended Madras Christian College and Madras Medical College. To complete his surgical residency, he immigrated from Chennai to Youngstown, Ohio with his nine months pregnant wife and their first child. Pappen and his family then moved to Canton, Illinois, where he started a successful surgical practice. In 1990 they moved to Northwest Indiana, where Pappen went on to build the home of his dreams, and continued to practice as a surgeon and family physician until he retired in 2006. Pappen was a doer, constantly engaged with many self-taught hobbies including gardening, carpentry, electrical work and plumbing. His foresight and wisdom, affectionate and generous nature, and constant optimism will be very much missed by his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Chicagolights.org.
