Fiore Floro Obituary

Fiore (Stocky) Floro Jr, 91, passed away on May 23, 2020 at Villa St Joseph of Baden.  He was born Gennaro (Junior) Floro in 1928 in Falerno, Calabria Italy.  He immigrated to the US in 1938 with his family. At that time immigration declared that Junior was not a valid name and they renamed him Fiore Jr after his father. He and his family settled in Sewickley where he lived for the remainder of his life.  Fiore was a superb high school athlete, spent much of his youth playing sports at the Sewickley YMCA and was a quarterback for the Sewickley Yellowjacket football team.  He served in the PA Air National Guard 146th Fighter interceptor Squadron.  He worked at the Sewickley A&P where he received his nickname of Stocky.  It was also at the A&P that he met his wife Caroline Petalino and they married in 1954.  After the A&P, Stocky worked for Sterling Varnish in Haysville for over 40 years before retiring.  Stocky was fan of any Pittsburgh sports team and watched Steelers games with the television muted and Myron cope on the radio.  He spent much of his retirement gardening and was most joyful while spending time with, and sneaking treats to, his three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  Stocky was a member of St James Catholic Church for over 80 years, where he served as an usher for over 20 years. He was familiar to many Sewickley residents from his daily walks to the village for coffee or to read the papers in the library.
Stocky was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years Caroline (Petalino), father Fiorevante, mother Thomasina (Perri), brother Francesco Floro, sister Antoinette Toth and his twin sister Clorinda (Candy) Floro.  He is survived by his children Michael (Pat) of Mars, Kathleen of Sewickley and Gregory of Sewickley, his grandchildren Beth Ann (Aaron) Conway, Michael (Julia) Floro and Jenna (Vance) Hefley and his great-grandchildren Caroline Lynn, William Fiore, Eliza Rose Conway and Perri Joy and Lorelai Grace Hefley, his soon to arrive sixth great-grandchild who will share his last name, his sister Emma Schneider and many nieces and nephews. His memory will live on in his loving family and in the many mysterious stories he would never fully clarify.

Due to the Covid pandemic restrictions, a private viewing will be held at Coles Funeral Home.  A private funeral mass will be held at St James Catholic Church, Sewickley, followed by interment at St James Cemetery
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St James Church or School.
