Steven J. Scully Obituary

Steven J. Scully, age 56, of Onaway, died at home unexpectedly on Friday May 22, 2020. The son of William T. and Sandra K. (Havens) Scully, Steve was born in Lapeer, Michigan on November 18, 1963 and moved to Onaway with his family when he was just a boy. He was a 1981 graduate of Onaway High School and went on to Mott Community College to advance his skills in automotive mechanics. He married Jeannine Williams in Onaway on August 15, 2009 and the two were a great team. A darn good mechanic, Steve loved wrenching on motors. He loved speed and power and had a deep appreciation for a good engine. Passionate about hot rods and drag racing, Steve’s pride and joy was his purple 1968 Plymouth GTX muscle car. He loved fast quads and was known for rippin’ around his property or tearin’ up the trails on his Yamaha Blaster. And lastly, there were tractors. Steve loved old antique tractors, as well as modern tractors with all the fancy bells and whistles and it was Steve’s opinion that “Nothing runs like a Deere”. It could be said that Steve was a good old fashioned country boy. He loved country music and having a beer with friends around a campfire. He loved farming and raising farm animals and livestock. Although he tried, crops weren’t so much his thing, but he definitely had the touch with animals. Animals held a special place in Steve’s heart and nothing brought him more joy that taking a small child through his barn and having them delight and marvel at the chickens, pigs, rabbits, goats, horses, and long horns. In fact, Steve loved young children and they loved him. Easy- going, he was the kind of guy who let kids get plenty dirty, whether it was playing in the mud or getting covered in grease up to their elbows. Steve was looking so forward to becoming a grandfather in a few months and he would have been a good one. Fun-loving, friendly, and quite a talker, Steve was well-liked. He would help anyone and always was the first to step-up when family and friends were in need. He was generous, often giving his time with little or no pay to repair a car or truck for a friend or neighbor. A prolific purveyor of nicknames, Steve called no one by their given name. Sometimes his family had no idea who he was referring to because he had a nickname for everyone (you may not know it, but he had a nickname for you too). Steve loved to have a good time and was known for his shenanigans. He would try anything, especially if it was just a touch on the crazy side. So the next time you are out for a drive in the middle of January and you see a couple of guys wearing life-vests being pulled down a snow-covered road in a flat bottom boat with fishing poles and drinking a few beers, please fondly think of Steve. A motor-head, a farmer, an animal lover, a wild and crazy guy, an awesome friend, a good neighbor, a loving son, brother, husband, father, and uncle, Steve Scully touched our lives. He will be missed. Surviving Steve is his wife, Jeannine, of Onaway; daughters, Jessica Scully of California and Jasmine Scully (Andrew Perry) of Onaway; mother, Sandra (Dale) Chapp and mother-in-law, Carol Williams, both of Onaway; sister, Lori (Todd) Nowicki of Rogers City; brother, Bill Scully of Almont; uncle, Terry Havens of Taylor; and sister-in-law, Christina Williams Chaskey of Onaway as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. Steve was preceded in death by his father, Bill, in 1978 and his infant son, Harley, in 1993. Visitation will be held at the Chagnon Funeral Home on Tuesday May 26, 2020 from 4 pm – 8 pm followed by a graveside service at Waverly Township Cemetery at 11:00 AM on Wednesday May 27, 2020.
