Mary Sheremeta Syracuse, New York Obituary

Mary Sheremeta

Mary Sheremeta, age 96, and a 61 year resident of Lafayette, NY, died peacefully on May 23, after a long series of age-related infirmities. She was a resident of The Cottages at Garden Grove in Cicero, NY since 2016 where caring staff provided comfort with dignity and love. Professionally, Mary was a registered nurse at Upstate Medical Center, and worked at the facility for over 20 years. She began her journey to that calling when she was in her 40's, and received an associate degree in nursing through the NYS Regents Degree Program of Empire College. Hence, after many years in her life as a wife, mother, and homemaker, she was able to accomplish an unfulfilled goal to be a nurse. Mary practiced nursing companionably with her many interests, including: homemaking, gardening, nature, birding, crossword and other puzzle solving games, and time with her dear husband, Oley until his death in 1995. Mary was well-known to her neighbors and friends for her large summer vegetable gardens and her special interest in cultivating garlic. Mary generously shared her gardening expertise and harvest with others. She is predeceased by: husband, Ollie Sheremeta; siblings, Paul Omelko, Bill Omelko, and Martha Kowal; daughter, Barbara Burger, son-in-law, Charles Burger, grandson, Ivan Burger, and son-in-law, Mark Banks. She is survived by: Identical twin sister, Anna Frizzell, Phoenixville, PA. Children: Mary Ellen Banks, Camp Hill, PA, Christine (Ted) Chapman, Tampa, FL, Mark (Melissa) Sheremeta, Manlius, NY, Oley Sheremeta, Tucson, AZ Grandchildren: Karl Banks, Julia Newton, Jeremy Burger, and Sylvia Donovan Great-grandchildren: Flora Newton; Juniper Banks; Ellee, Ilana, and Torren Burger; and Charlie, Callie and Rosie Donovan Donations in Mary's memory can be made for the St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church Dome Restoration (207 Thompkins Street, Syracuse, NY 13204). Or, as Mary might say: "Remember me by spending a little money on yourself and enjoy the memories of our time together."
