Regina Caroline Zamoiski Obituary

Born November 10, 1945. Died peacefully April 23, 2016 at her home in Otter Rock, surrounded by her son and two of her closest friends.

Regina was raised on a dairy farm in Candor, NY and earned her degree in nursing from Nazareth College of Rochester in 1967. She then worked as a registered nurse in Burlington, Vermont and New York City before driving cross country in 1971, and settling on the Oregon Coast. Gina then worked in a number of hospitals in Lincoln County, as well as for the Red Cross of Oregon.

The same sense of exploration that brought her to the west coast was evident as she took full advantage of Oregon’s free and public beaches both near her home and up and down the entire coast in search of solitude, agates and other treasures of the Pacific Ocean. Regina found inspiration and respite in the natural world, exploring waterfalls, hot springs, camping, and roaming the pacific northwest and enjoying all it had to offer.

She became a Master Gardener and her love of plants and flowers is wonderfully evident in her unique gardens. Many a friend enjoying the fruits of her ever present pruning shears as well as her gifts of divisions, starts and seeds. Coming from the cold winters in New York, she took great pleasure in counting how many different flowers were blooming at any given time in her yard and reporting that to her siblings back east. Gina participated in the local mushroom club and was well versed in identifying the various local flora and fauna. Her competitive spirit came to the forefront as one of the legendary Bay Haven Ball Busters, and there were innumerable good times shooting pool and partying on the bayfront with teammates and friends.

We remember her as wild and free, skipping barefoot through the woods, tough as nails, always reading, highly competent, never afraid to verbally put bigots and chauvinists in their place with her sharp tongue and never one to mince words. Regina was known for her courage, independence, veracity, generosity, and personal freedom.

Regina is survived by her son, Calvin A. Smith, daughter-in-law Valentina G. Orantes and her two grandchildren, Matteo and Emilio Smith Orantes, and a herd of siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
