Ida Sharon Gatien Sudbury, Ontario Obituary

Ida Sharon Gatien

Ida Gatien (Nee Lidemark) Immigrated to Canada with her parents at an early age. From etiquette lessons in Denmark to Saskatchewan farming, where she learned to be the best farmer around. Loving wife of 71 years to Clary Gatien, mother of Brian, (Darlene Devon predeceased, Vickie Kaminski); Sharon (Jim Dinnes); Wayne (Roxie Wellings predeceased, Bev Ferguson); Rene (Laurie Jennings), Dean (Kelli Edmunds); Lynn and Joan (Scott Ingraham) Grand children David, Michelle, Chris, Johanna, Luc, Courtney, Krista, Donna, Tracy, Geoffrey, Sarah, Rhonda, Ashley, Nicholas, Bradley, Breanne, Eric, Michael, Matthew, Colleen, Hannah, Tonya and Bryce. And 24 Great grandchildren and still expanding. Such a diverse person, she was ahead of her time, being the first woman Teamster in her local in the 1940’s. She delivered milk with a horse drawn wagon from a dairy in Port Arthur (Thunder Bay). There is a chapter written about Ida in the book Against the Current by Judith Finlayson. A pillar of the community with her leadership skills. She was a 4H leader, active member of the Penage Road Women’s Institute, St. Christopher’s Ladies Auxiliary; and various CWL groups where they lived. Ida was a master seamstress, quilter, gardener and all-around amazing cook. Her staple was traditional Danish recipes which all of her children and grandchildren continually try to perfect to her standards. Throughout their lives, Ida and Clary lived in the many places where Clary worked, including Pine Falls, Vermillion Bay, Thunder Bay, Winnipeg, Iroquois Falls, North Bay, and Whitefish. Wherever they lived, Ida created a home and every one was always welcome in her home. Ida was never more alive and magical, then when their home was full of children, their spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We all had a blast! We can’t thank our mother and grandmother enough for the patience and hard work she dedicated to her family. We hope the bread we bake and the gardens we grow continue to be shared in love. Ida will be truly missed but not forgotten. Family Funeral Service in the R. J. Barnard Chapel Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home 233 Larch Street, Sudbury Sunday, May 24th, 2020 at 3pm.
